Man accused of robbing Ann Arbor bank facing federal charges

By Lee Higgins

A man who Ann Arbor police say robbed a bank this month and led officers on a high-speed chase is accused of committing four bank robberies in three counties since September.

Kye Washington-Cody Abraham, 32, of Stockbridge, was arraigned Monday in federal court in Detroit on four counts of bank robbery, court records show.

He’s accused of robbing the following banks:

  • TCF Bank, 125 Briarwood Circle, Ann Arbor (March 8).
  • Comerica Bank, 2815 East Michigan Avenue, Blackman Township, Jackson County (Feb. 25 and Sept. 3).
  • Chase Bank, 10083 Highland Road, Hartland, Livingston County (Feb.18).

Abraham is scheduled to appear Wednesday in federal court in Detroit at 1 p.m. for a detention hearing.

If convicted, he faces up to 80 years in prison.

His attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Rita Chastang, could not be reached for comment today.

In total, Abraham made off with more than $10,700, according to an affidavit supporting the complaint by FBI Special Agent Gregory Brown.

According to the affidavit, the Ann Arbor robbery was "consistent" with the first three robberies. In those cases, a “lone white male entered the bank wearing a hooded jacket, head covering and gloves,” the affidavit says. He provided a “hand-written demand note,” the affidavit says, then took money from the teller and left the area on a bicycle.

Ann Arbor police and Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputies say they brought the bank robbery spree to a halt shortly after the March 8 robbery at TCF Bank about 5 p.m.

During a pursuit, deputies stopped Abraham's pickup truck with spike strips and apprehended him as he attempted to run away at the border of Scio and Lima townships, police said.

According to the affidavit, Abraham "attempted to ram" the truck into marked police cars during the pursuit. Officers caught up with truck after a woman in her vehicle followed it onto I-94 westbound after learning of the robbery from a 911 dispatcher, the affidavit says.

The woman was in the Briarwood Mall parking lot and noticed the man riding a bicycle, "clutching his stomach area," the affidavit says. He dropped something as he put the bicycle onto the bed of his truck, which didn't have a license plate, the affidavit says. The woman thought it was suspicious and called 911 to inquire "if anyone had been robbed in the area," the affidavit says.

In the pickup truck, Ann Arbor police recovered cash, a cardboard demand note, Schwinn bicycle, clothing and other items, the affidavit says.

Blackman Township police executed a search warrant at Abraham's home that night, seizing evidence indicating Abraham twiced robbed the Comerica bank branch, the affidavit says. The affidavit does not specify what was recovered.

Investigators believe he committed the Chase bank robbery based on surveillance photographs, clothing found in his truck and evidence found at his home, the affidavit says.

Obviously not the brightest bulb in the box, but you have to give him an A for originality.

Tellers rarely have more than a few grand each at any time and always have to get more that is secured elsewhere for larger cash withdrawls. As we can see this is for good reason and is probably based on a formula required by their insurance provider.

$10.7k in total? Not only is he a serial bank robber if convicted, he's a really bad one at it as well....from the first alleged robbery in Sept to the last in March....based on a 40 hour work week, that is about $9.90/hr. The truck wash in Dexter pays around that much...

Mr. Abraham has a Dept. of Corrections record but funny thing is that it doesn't state what for... Speaking of the DOC... It'd ber nice if more than 1/2 of the entries actually had the peoples pics... The 'Not Available' isn't cutting it, IMO.
