Michigan Islamic Academy Top Scholars

Michigan Islamic Academy held its 2011 graduation ceremonies' Wednesday, June 15 at Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Building Towsley Auditorim. The class included 11 graduates.

Tahoora Ansari

Parents: Shakil and Tanvir Ansari

Activities and Awards: Tahoora was president of the National Honor Society during senior year and treasurer during junior year, student government class representative during her freshmen and junior years, vice president of Model United Nations chapter and head delegate at University of Michigan Model United Nations in 2010 and 2011, design editor of the yearbook, layout chief of the newsletter as well as a regular contributor, treasurer of the literary magazine. She is a member of the School Improvement Committee, and secretary of the Michigan Muslim Youth Council. Tahoora spent more than 400 hours as an avid volunteer at Food Gatherers Community Kitchen, Humane Society of Huron Valley, American Red Cross-Washtenaw County Chapter, University of Michigan Motor Meals, Michigan Islamic Academy, Northside Elementary School, Temple Beth Emeth and Ann Arbor District Library. Throughout high school, she was on the Principal's List Honor Roll and dual enrolled at Washtenaw Community College and the University of Missouri's Center's for Distance Learning and Independent Study. Tahoora received awards for outstanding achievement, academic excellence and innovation in science and has received a Presidential Scholarship and Maize and Blue Scholarship.

Plans after graduation: Tahoora plans to attend the University of Michigan Ann Arbor College of Literature, Science and the Arts to study cellular and molecular biology with a pre-med concentration. She aspires to be a pediatric surgeon in the future and work with Doctors without Borders.

Hichem El-Mohri

Parents: Youcef El-Mohri and Amel El-Mohri

Activities and Awards: During his high school years, Hichem held many leadership positions, including vice president and president of the Student Government Organization,pPresident of the Model United Nations chapter, and treasurer of the school newsletter. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and was nominated as the school representative at the Michigan Youth Leadership conference. Hichem volunteered as an ACT prep tutor for many students in math and science. He also acted as a captain of the school safety patrol for two years. Hichem volunteered his time at Sunrise, the senior assisted living home, and participated in many local events, providing food, clothing and aid to the homeless. Finally, he was part of the organizing committee of a local youth group for two years, planning activities and educational events.

Plans after graduation: Hichem plans to attend the University of Michigan - Dearborn's College of Engineering with the goal of pursuing a medical degree.

Bilal Khan

Parents: Sohail Khan and Syeda Anees

Activities and Awards: Bilal was a National Honor Society member in 10th and 11th grades and was treasurer in 12th grade. He served as a MDOT Highway Cleanup program volunteer as well as being a doctoral assistant. Bilal received the Best Citizenship award in ninth grade. He placed in the top three in the Foreign Language Competition four years in a row and placed in top three in the Annual Science Fair Competition in freshman and sophomore year. Bilal was on the Honor Roll List four years in a row.

Plans after graduation: Bilal plans to attend the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and establish a dental practice in the future.
