Michigan Health Marketplace legislation will protect health care consumers

By Letters to the Editor

I am grateful to Gov. Snyder and the Senate Health Policy Committee for providing the leadership necessary to get the Michigan Health Marketplace underway. There is much to support in the current legislation, such as the provision that prohibits employees of insurance carriers, health benefit plans and health care providers from serving on the governing board.

I support Senate Bill 693 and encourage the committee and the members of both chambers in Lansing to look for even further measures to strengthen this legislation in order to assure that it provides full protection to health care consumers.

I think it is important to move the process forward in a timely manner so as to maintain Michigan's compliance with federal law and thereby avoid unnecessary involvement from the federal government. I encourage our state representatives and senators to support this legislation and to exert their full influence in expediting the process.

Thanks Dale for bringing up an important topic. It is very important for the Michigan State House to take up this legislation. It is vital to our state to design a Health Insurance Exchange that meets the needs of the people of Michigan. S 693 has been the result of the work of a diverse task force set up last year to design a plan for Michigan. It is a good bill that meets the requirements under Obamacare while provding consumers access to health insurance options and information to make informed choices that benefit the consumer. All State House Representatives should support this bill.
