Pedestrian suffers broken leg when hit by car in downtown Ann Arbor

By Lisa Carolin

A woman was taken to the hospital after she was hit by a car on South State Street near Washington Street in downtown Ann Arbor Saturday.

The woman was walking across the street in the 200 block of South State Street when the car hit her about 3:30 p.m., Ann Arbor Fire Department Battalion Chief Robert Vogel said.

She suffered a broken leg. Huron Valley Ambulance paramedics took her to the University of Michigan Hospital.

Ann Arbor police said they did not immediately have information on the incident Saturday afternoon.

It was my daughter that was hit on Saturday. She looked both ways, she was not on her phone, she was not texting. She was crossing the street to get some food. Yes she goes to Michigan State, a senior, don't even make a stupid comment about that. Everyone stopped except for one young man in a pickup. He hit her. Her leg is fractured and needed surgery. A rod and 4 screws are in her leg. It will take 6 months of rehab and recovery. . She is in tears with the pain every minute. Now she has to miss school, pass on her internship. Basically her life is messed up right now. Those that have made rude comments, I have no words for you, just hope you grow up one day.

Dear Matt, yes there have been rude comments,I am surprise at the lack of sympathy of the commentators. what ever the reason(what she was doing when crossing the street ) seems to fascinate the a2 commentators ,they are probably young students who watch too much Saturday nite live. so I am the older one here to tell you kids, each and every one to apologize to Matt for being so insensitive and we all wish your daughter a speedy recover however her injuries do sound severe and for that I do feel sorry for her.

My husband was there, and it was very alarming. The woman was not crossing at the crosswalk (jaywalking is very common in that area--as many of you seem to know). I'm very glad to have found this article and to see that she wasn't more seriously injured.

As a frequent pedestrian in Ann Arbor, I can hardly say that I am surprised. I have near misses with cars all of the time. Most of the near misses I encounter occur when I am crossing the street at a marked and signaled crosswalk and always involve a vehicle making a turn with left turns being the most common near misses. Whenever we get a lot of out of town people, the situation is worse. I suspect that a lot of people don't regularly drive in areas with a lot of pedestrians so they just aren't used to looking for pedestrians when they make turns. I had *two* near misses myself on Friday because there were a lot of folks in town for the game. All I can say is please pay attention when you make turns, drivers.

Ann Arbor Police had no information Saturday afternoon. I wonder if they have any information now on Sunday afternoon?

This article is just more fodder for the local government to ban motor vehicles altogether in Ann Arbor, no matter who is at fault or regardless it was during Football Saturday. Or at least make it so you need a special permit to even drive in Ann Arbor.

There are certain streets in Ann Arbor which would benefit from being turned into all pedestrian areas. State Street is one of them but also Main street. Imagine how much more outdoor seating we could have then! What a good idea!

Like that would ever happen on this planet. Maybe the article is just an article with no hidden messaging or demonic subliminal messages.

There is room for guilt on both sides of the pedestrian/vehicle issue. I am sorry this young woman was hurt and I hope that she heals. I hope all who saw this happen will be more careful in the future as a result of the shock of seeing what can happen. The shock is that it does not happen every day.

Once upon a time massive vehicles could roll freely downtown and park. People could go do business and shop amidst the few wandering students. The model worked perfectly well. Today, overpopulation and the non-solution of density development is killin g the attraction. While it looks like a hopping place with theatres, bars, restaurants, coffee houses, and of course record-setting football crowds, city planners have no clue and Ann Arbor will soon become just another bland suburb of Detroit. The only difference will be a criminal pedestrian law that exacerbates traffic flow. So how is the Washtenaw crosswalk victim doing ? It is last chance October. Did the City get sued yet?

LXIX is 100% correct. I drive daily in AA and find the city lack of planning comission and whom ever else allows building and road modification as well as laws encouraging wilful disregard to the traffic continually make AA an unsafe place to walk or drive. The crosswalk law is ok but enforce traffic regs with reckless bicycles who never show any regard for either cars or peds. TICKET peds and bikes with the same $130.00 ticket drivers and publicise a crack down and we will see a quick change in our traffic problems

While we don't know the circumstances of this accident, the number of pedestrians in downtown Ann Arbor who walk into traffic without looking is staggering. I went to a movie at the State Theater yesterday and saw a young women walk against the crossing light, right into traffic. Only the quick action of a car going northbound on State prevented her from being hit.

And many of these jaywalkers are supposedly brilliant college students (?). U-M needs to require a course in COMMON SENSE.

Maybe the new laws have people confused about whether they can just walk out into traffic??? Ya' think?

I witnessed a young lady crossing the street while texting and was just about about to run into a passing vehicle, she missed the vehicle by just a few inches, this was on Stadium Ave.

A friend of mine saw the accident, and unfortunately when people tried to call 911, their calls did not go through. Ann Arbor really needs to do something to fix the cell phone service on game days.

So what did your friend say happened? Was she at an intersection or crosswalk? Did she run out in front of the car? Did the car speed along and hit her as she crossed?

I nearly hit a girl a block from there last night. She just walked out in front of me as I was proceeding through the green on S. State St. at Liberty. She avoided injury only by the grace of fine German engineering and my willingness to fully engage the ABS. I was pretty shaken up, but she went on her way as if nothing had happened. She seemed oblivious to the fact that 5000 pounds of aluminum can cause serious harm, even at only 25 mph. Same girl?

Sun, Oct 21, 2012 : 3:21 p.m.

@B2Pilot ABS engages at all speeds. I suggest you try the system on your own car and familiarize yourself with it in case you ever have to use it in an emergency.

By the grace of German engineering? Really? I'm sure an American car could perform the same manuever. Posted speed limit on campus is 25, your ABS activated? how fast was that German car of yours going?

So you and your friends are made of aluminum? Yikes!

Sun, Oct 21, 2012 : 1:20 a.m.

Audi A8L 4.2. Technically only 4400 pounds of car (aluminum), but with five guys in it (as we had last night), easily 5000 pounds.

ArthGuinness

Finally found one: BMW X6, all 5225 lbs of it. At that weight, not much of it could possibly be aluminum, I suspect they fill the frame rails with tungsten to make it so overweight.

What German car weighs 5000lbs and is all aluminum? Unless you were in a Panzer tank hauling scrap metal in a trailer?

I'll be curious to see in the follow up article what the status of the pedestrian cross walk signal was, as well as which electronic devices the pedestrian was using.

Seriously, it is shocking that more pedestrians are not hit every day in AA. Pedestrians around campus can be reckless and arrogant.
