Police arrest man in assault of U-M Hospital cafeteria manager

By Heidi Fenton

A 25-year-old Ypsilanti man was arrested today in connection with the weekend assault of a cafeteria manager at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, University Spokeswoman Diane Brown said.

The suspect, who reportedly pulled a stun gun on the worker, was taken into custody without further incident at his home Monday afternoon. He will remain in the Washtenaw County Jail pending his arraignment this week, Brown said.

The incident was reported at about 6:40 p.m. Friday when the man pulled a stun gun and assaulted a cafeteria manager before running out the south entrance of the hospital.

Police described the incident as an attempted robbery, but Brown said it was not clear whether the stun gun was used during the attack.

Brown would not comment on the man’s identity, but said police were not pursuing any other suspects.

Would be nice to give a few more details. For example which police force are you referring to? University of Michigan Police? Ann Arbor Police? Washtenaw County Sheriff?

But but hospitals in general and ANY U of M property is a weapons free zone. Jeez some people can't follow a few simple rules can they?

BTW "prohibits the carrying of legal knives, pepper spray, stun guns or other legal non-firearm weapons " - stun guns are not civilian legal if you are going to nit pick http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2011/03/citizen_taser_could_be_legal_t.html Also "There is no such thing as a "weapons free zone" in Michigan." is the opposite of "There are pistol-free zones and weapons free SCHOOL zones.."

I made up eh? Now now, lets not be so narrow minded. I never said the State is the only one making the zones. In this case, since U of M Hospital is U of M property, their rules are in force there. http://www.umd.umich.edu/317101/ For other hospitals in general, you are correct that they are allegedly Pistol Free Zones but anyone carrying any weapon with intent to use them illegally well... 750.226 Firearm or dangerous weapon; carrying with unlawful intent. Sec. 226. Carrying firearm or dangerous weapon with unlawful intent—Any person who, with intent to use the same unlawfully against the person of another, goes armed with a pistol or other firearm or dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or knife having a blade over 3 inches in length, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, shall be guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than 5 years or by a fine of not more than 2,500 dollars. Also since private property owners can set the rules by which people can be in their facilities, I can assure you if security does not like you and whatever they feel is a weapon...for example http://www.childrensdmc.org/?id=108&sid=1 Now don't go getting yourself in trouble now. After all ignorance of the law...

You mean the rule that you just made up and doesn't exist? There is no such thing as a "weapons free zone" in Michigan. There are pistol-free zones and weapons free SCHOOL zones, as defined by the state legislature and can be found in the Michigan Compiled Laws. If you are aware of any state law which specifically prohibits the carrying of legal knives, pepper spray, stun guns or other legal non-firearm weapons into hospitals, then please provide us to a link to the appropriate MCL.

I believe eveyone will agree that the DPS needs to read a "Trespass Notice" to this chap.

A temporary trespass warning followed by asking the judge to make an order part of the conditions of his probation would be more effective and would follow the law.
