Police identify 14-year-old Ypsilanti boy who drowned in Belleville Lake
A 14-year-old boy who drowned in Belleville Lake was identified today as Kacey Farley of Ypsilanti Township.
Van Buren Township police said Farley was swimming with his 18-year-old cousin in the lake near I-94 east of Rawsonville Road Wednesday afternoon. Farley swam past the buoys and began to call for help, police said.
A dive team searched for an hour and found Farley in 8 feet of water, 200 feet from shore, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday. Belleville Lake does not have lifeguards.
Farley was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township.
Police said they do not yet know what caused Farley to drown. His cousin told police Farley knew how to swim.

I swam across Belleville Lake, at that time it was known as Edison Lake,,, about half way across, I was very tired, though about turning back, but realized I was passed the point of no return{more than half way across} needless to say I made it across, something I will never forget,,,just a dumb teenage thing.

The story said he knew how to swim. Most drownings in this state are alcohol related, people going out past buoys, or getting caught in a current. I do agree swimming should be taught to all kids in the state of Michigan. Swimming is great for helping obesity, and the amount of water in this state makes it the responsible thing to do

Even the best swimmers can cramp up, become exhausted, panic, etc. Only the most advanced swimming lessons deal with these issues.

>> as a PE requirement. Not a bad idea, but what about schools with no facilities? The state (one of the fattest in the country) can't get kids to exercise at all, so I would doubt swimming would be accepted. Personally, this was a mandatory thing when we had our kids. They were in the water with us with diapers, and as they became older were in lessons. I never had fear of the water, and I didn't want our kids to either. A healthy respect we all do have, but not fear.

Seeing that many young people drown in local lakes/ponds/river every summer, I wonder if it would make sense to swim lessons mandatory in all K-12 grades, as a PE requirement.

His name was spelled Kacey. He was a good kid, it's very sad.
