Q&A: Why did Rick Snyder endorse Mitt Romney?

By Cindy Heflin

What made Gov. Rick Snyder decide to endorse Mitt Romney? Jobs. At least that’s what he told MLive reporter Jeff Watrick.

“It’s the jobs issue, really focusing on that as the core,” Snyder said. “I really believe that. Again, that’s why I was elected and that’s what our citizens want out of Michigan. Beyond that, his background is great—having all the private sector experience of understanding what it takes to create a job, maintain a job and creating an environment where that can flourish. And then being a chief executive of a state, I think it’s a great background.”

A few months ago Obama's chances of being re-elected were next to none. The GOP could possibly have picked any ultra-conservative (maybe even Palin) and he or she could have won. Things have changed. The economy is perceived as improving. His approval numbers are climbing. And the electorate has watched the candidates rip each other to shreds with a debate soap opera and, yes, PAC attack ads. Newt's run is over, Ron's great but he'll never win, and Rick might be the rising-star underdog. But he is definitely not a fiscal conservative and Obama and Media Matters will hammer him with his right wing social evangelical beliefs. He has absolutely no chance in the general election. The true conservative who can take us across the finish line in November is Romney. He may not be the most animated, but consider this. All the reasons the base may not quite consider him conservative enough, are the exact reasons he will carry the marginal and independent voters necessary to win against the Democratic machine. Make no mistake, voting to nominate Rick or anyone else will guarantee 4 more years of Obama. Then, when you wake up November 7th and see his landslide victory and wonder how this could happen, go look in the mirror. Wake up! Vote Romney 2012.

Romney is going to take you across the finish line? Will you be in the car or riding on the roof?

Romney is the only one of the above that brought universal health care to a whole State, is that why you think he's electable. Are you saying that a " true conservative" is one who brings about universal health care?

If you don't play like a good boy the Republican establishment will put you on the naughty list ( same is true for the Democrats ). We have neo-con tea party Tim Walberg and liberal Republican Rick Snyder throwing their hats in the ring for Mitt Romney. The good news is that it spells death for the tea party movement if the Republican establishment ditches the hard right of the party.

Having to choose between Romney and Santorum? That's being put between a rock and a hard place if you're a moderate-flavor of conservative. I think he went with the lesser evil.

If you're a republican and have a modicum of sanity left (after the teaparty has become the standard to pander to) who else would you endorse?? santorum is a great candidate, if this were the 13th century or Iran; Paul is from outerspace ( since he's clueless about this world and its complexities) ; and Gingerich's sole agenda is the deification of the almighty Newt. Of course Romney does have some explaining to do re his seeming continuing support for an outfit that practices the tacky ( and frankly unbelievable to anyone over 6) posthumous baptism thing on those of other faiths .

the word 'or' was there. I meant to refer to 13th century europe ( rife with internal christian on christian crusades and heading up to the black death)... and yes i am well acquainted with 13thcentury asia ( although in iran that period was a turning point from a "pinnacle' to a mongol devastated place. actually, a century all told , not unlike what we may be facing..

I saw Rick this morning on Morning Joe, everyone asked him the same thing, how could you endorse Romney after Romney came out against auto bailouts? His answer was Romney can create jobs and job creation is the only thing that matters. Its funny, neither one has any idea how to create jobs in the private sector. What creates jobs is demand and by raising state taxes on almost everyone in Michigan last year, (except businesses which he lowered by $1.8B) how does that create more demand for things? My taxes will go up $1200. Thats less demand from me. All the teachers he laid off with the 15% cut in education, thats decreased demand, all the fire and police laid off, thats decreased demand.

Every airline has gone bankrupt and they all stayed in business after reorganization, as could have General Motors, without Eliminating the rights of the bond holders in favor of the unions.

Have you paid attention? Businesses are expanding in Michigan because of the new tax structure, we are creating jobs and it looks like we'll have a surplus for the first time in decades. The cuts to education took out some of the fat from a horribly inefficient system, but now we can restore funds if and when they are actually needed, since we have the revenue. It all starts with business.
