Four road projects up for discussion Tuesday when Lodi Township officials meet with Road Commission

By Lisa Allmendinger

Repairs on Saline Waterworks, Textile and Zeeb roads in Lodi Township are among the projects that will be discussed by township officials and the Washtenaw County Road Commission Tuesday evening.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Township Hall, 3755 Pleasant Lake Road.

Among the options up for discussion are:

  • The addition of about 6,000 tons of limestone to Saline Waterworks Road from the end of the pavement to Dell Road at an estimated cost of $105,000.
  • Also on the list for this road is the addition of about 4,800 tons of limestone from Dell Road ending at 6185 Saline Waterworks Road at an estimated cost of $76,000.
  • Textile Road from Ann Arbor-Saline Road to Zeeb Road could see the addition of 7,300 tons of limestone and associated work at an estimated cost of $119,000.
  • Zeeb Road from Textile Road to the bridge could see ditching on the east side of Zeeb at an estimated cost of $15,500.

With no matching funds leftover from last year, the township will have about $360 less dollars to use because less uncurbed miles are under the jurisdiction of the Road Commission.

There is about $22,720 in match money available for local roads and about $12,880 in the drainage matching program.

There are 41.65 miles of certified gravel roads in the township and last year, officials chose to have the Road Commission apply two solid applications of calcium chloride dust control to all of them at $0.525 per gallon. One solid application takes about 89,300 gallons and costs about $46,880.

Last year, among the major projects in the township were crack and chip sealing on Pleasant Lake Road from Parker to Zeeb roads and on Scio Church from Strieter to Zeeb. Ellsworth Road from Gensley to Parker saw additional limestone and ditch work. The township spent about $150,000 on road work in 2011. Saline-Waterworks Rd. is CONSTANTLY horrible, as is Dell Rd. and Bethel Church Rd. The road crews do little more than make the road look "pretty" by smearing a little gravel here and there. They always come out right before it's going to rain. The next day, the potholes are there again, and you cannot tell they were even graded. I dare you to take a drive down Waterworks Rd. and not be completely disgusted. It's very unsafe and nobody from the township or the road commission cares. My neighbors and I have been wondering if the Road Commission even exists anymore.

26 years on my dirt road and I can count on one hand the number of loads of gravel we have received in spite of the numerous calls to both the township and road commission of the deplorable and unsafe conditions on Bethel Church rd. I don't care about limestone. I'll take any kind of gravel at this point.
