A Saline man had more than $3,800 in saws, drills and other construction tools stolen from his car sometime between Feb. 3 and Monday, according to Saline police.

The theft occurred in between 8 p.m. Feb. 3 and 7 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of Clark Street, according to the police report.

The man realized the items, which were taken out of the his locked car, were gone when he was driving to work on Monday and reported the incident to police later that day, the report stated.

@ jcj: Back in '77, I added up the value of the tools I carried around in the trunk of my '69 Dodge Dart. It came to about $2,400. In '83, someone broke into my truck and snatched just one box of tools containing my belt, drills, etc. Not having proper documentation, I talked it over with my insurance guy, who was, surprisingly, very helpful and supportive. I proposed using prices from several-year-old catalogs that Stadium Hardware gave me, and we amicably agreed on $1500 as the value for that one box of tools. And that was a long time ago. My current cordless drill cost me over $500 with premium batteries and a couple of special-purpose chucks. Today's price, of course, has gone up.

It wasn't a swinger 340 was it? Maybe you are shopping at the wrong place. It is hard to find a cordless drill kit for over $400 At Lowes DEWALT 18-Volt 1/2" Cordless Drill Kit $259.00 Model #: DCD940KX Same model drill kit at Grainger $323 Hammer drills can run $500 Cordless rotary hammer drills can run over $700 To that degree It is possible ( unlikely) that he could have had over $3000 in tools.

Sounds like the tools were in the car, not the trunk. Not wise.

I agree with all comments here: 1) Yes, the value does sound inflated. Average price for those kinds of tools at HD or Lowe's is likely under $2000 and even then somebody who invests that kind of monies in tools is likely a pro and needs a truck or puts them away inside, keeping them in plain sight in a car for a week is odd. 1a) Yes, maybe jcj does sound like he can work for an insurance company 2) I agree. Saline is getting worse than Milan. 3) ???

It seems like there are more and more robberies in Saline. My brother lives there and insists it is the least crime ridden place there is. I'm not so sure.

@Fat Bill Agreed. I have a friend who says robbery instead of theft all the time.

Robbery involves force or the threat thereof. This is theft. Big difference. You rob a liquor store by threatening to shoot the clerk if he doesn't give you the money from the till. If you wait until he's not looking and empty the cash drawer, that's theft...

Those are some expensive tools. Sounds like the value was padded a little. Most circular saws average less than $150 lets say 3 totals $600 Most belt sanders are less but lets say 2 totals $400 lets say 2 cordless drills total $400 most come with batteries and chargers but lets add $200 Lets say 1 corded drill $200 lets assume 1 nailer was a finish nailer $150 and 1 was a framing nailer $250 1 chop saw maybe $400 That totals $2600 now you can spend more but these prices were actually pretty generous. And is I had more expensive tools I would probably have a truck to keep them in.

A good Hitachi double compound miter saw will run you $750-800. Note there was no mention of a compressor being stolen so the prices you gave for nail guns are based on pnuematic guns. I have to assume his were cordless Impulse guns or he would have had a compressor. Extra batteries for cordless drills are $75 each. Replace all the $15 saw blades that come stock on those saws with good quality $60 blades and there you easily have $3800 worth of tools.

Robo Do a little research BEFORE speaking! I priced tools that are NOT rubbish! I have been using these kinds of tools for a living for 40 years. I know! And the price would be half as much IF I were talking Kobalt!

Maybe these were expensive high quality American made tools. Not everybody buys imported junk. Most of the tools found in Lowes and Home Depot such as Kobalt, etc are made in China...Rubbish.
