Sheriff's deputies arrest several people in reported weekend home invasions

By Cindy Heflin

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies arrested several people this weekend as they investigated reported home invasions, including one person found hiding in a storage shed and another who was carrying a handgun.

About 12:50 p.m. Friday, a resident came home and found someone inside his house in the 1000 block of Delaware Avenue in Ypsilanti Township, sheriff's deputies said. The man fled, but police used a tracking dog to find a suspect hiding in a storage shed several houses away, a sheriff's department media summary said.

At his feet were DVDs, Xbox games and a laptop computer taken from the house, said Sgt. David Archer of the sheriff's department. The man said the items were not his and he had no idea where they came from, Archer said. Deputies determined that a window had been pried to gain entry to the house.

Deputies arrested the suspect, identified as Shane Alan Dutterer, 20, of Ypsilanti Township. Dutterer was arraigned on one charge of first-degree home invasion, a 20-year felony.

Still missing are a wallet, cash and semi-automatic handgun. Deputies believe another person was involved in the burglary, Archer said.

On Saturday, deputies on patrol in Superior Township noticed a bicycle parked at the rear of a home in the 8000 block of MacArthur Boulevard south of Harris Road about 5 p.m. Knowing there had been several burglaries reported in the area in the past couple of months, they investigated and found a man leaving the residence by the rear door, according to a media summary.

They arrested the man, a 23-year-old Belleville resident, without incident and discovered he was wanted on eight outstanding warrants, the media summary said. The man also had what deputies suspected to be drugs, the summary said.

Deputies said the man opened an unlocked door to get in the home. Nothing was taken.

The suspect was transported to the County Jail. The case is being turned over to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

On Sunday, deputies went to investigate a home invasion complaint in the 6000 block of Lake Drive in Ypsilanti Township about 9 p.m. On the way, they were told that the home invasion involved three people and one was armed with a handgun.

Sgt. Jeffrey Hankamp, who was first to arrive, saw three people matching the description of the suspects near by and ordered all three to the ground, Sgt. Archer said. A handgun fell out of the waistband of one of the three.

Hankamp called for backup and all three people were taken into custody. Police are seeking weapons charges against the 31-year-old Detroit man who had the gun, Archer said. The other two suspects were released after police determined the home invasion report was false, he said.

"... noticed a bicycle parked at the rear of a home in the 8000 block of MacArthur Boulevard south of Harris Road about 5 p.m. Knowing there had been several burglaries reported in the area in the past couple of months," Isn't this redundant? When it comes to crime, MacArthur Boulevard shows up on annarbor.com more than any other place. Good grief.

I'll add my appreciation for these law enforcement officers to that of the others here. Home invasions: I haven't kept up on this topic but it used to be there was no law specifically aimed at home invasions. I hope Michigan has such a law by now. Home invasions are not only among the most costly to victims in terms of property loss, they are among the most dangerous kinds of crime because the victims are so often caught off guard and are therefore at the mercy of the perpetrator(s). A home invader who has never committed a violent crime before can suddenly turn into a killer once they know they are in total control. I'm glad none of the victims were confronted with that kind of danger. This is scary stuff: to suddenly find some stranger who is knowingly attempting to take away valuables in your own home. Three such incidents in three consecutive days: just serves as a reminder to us about home security. Good locks, a security system and a handgun - constantly - within reach: these are the primary points to think about. IMO: like smoke detectors, home security systems should be mandatory in order to meet building codes.

Michigan does have a specific home-invasion law. You can read it at <a href="http://law.onecle.com/michigan/750-michigan-penal-code/mcl-750-110a.html" rel='nofollow'>http://law.onecle.com/michigan/750-michigan-penal-code/mcl-750-110a.html</a> on the Web.

Great police work, deputies. I wonder how cameras would apprehend the alleged crooks.

I wonder if the alleged criminals in either instance had concealed pistol licenses or bothered to register their firearms. Hmm ya think? Yay on that laptop being recovered lord knows the amount of mayhem that could have caused!
