Two-car crash critically injures driver on US-23 in Pittsfield Township

By Cindy Heflin

A man was in critical condition following a two-car crash on U.S-23 south of Ann Arbor early Friday morning.

The man was driving south on US-23 near Merritt Road between 5:30 and 6 a.m. when he lost control of the car, crossed the median and ended up in the northbound lanes, where another car struck his vehicle, said Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason.

Both drivers were taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township, Gleason said. The woman driving the other vehicle had minor injuries.

The freeway was closed for at least an hour and a half, and the accident caused a long backup on the freeway in both directions for several hours.

Further information, including the ages of the drivers and the makes of vehicles involved, was not available.

Snow that fell early this morning glazed roads and resulted in several other crashes in the Ann Arbor area Friday morning.

Good morning. I was the driver of the car in the Northbound lane involved in this accident. Just wanted to say that I'm not a woman. Also, that I went to the hospital after 45 minutes and not a single cop had showed up. So unfortunately, I don't even know the name of the person that I hit. I've been praying for his health, because it took 8 firemen about 20 minutes to get him out of the car. Lancelot's right, when it's crappy out, PLEASE TAKE NOTE.

Check out the cable barriers in action. I believe 23 and 94 are both scheduled for these barriers this year and next... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvTxsJrL40g First responders, including towers are already being trained in how to work with vehicles tangled in the cable barriers...

This is a good example of the need for the median barriers
