University of Michigan opens Stockwell dorm after a 15-month and $40M renovation
Stockwell Hall, a women's dormitory for 69 years at the University of Michigan, has gone coed and reopened after undergoing a $39.6 million overhaul.
University President Mary Sue Coleman is scheduled to attend a grand opening ceremony from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today for Stockwell Hall.
The dorm opened in 1940 and housed women until spring 2008, when it closed for renovations. The dorm, which had 415 beds before the makeover, now has 402 beds. Most rooms are singles, according to University spokesman Peter Logan.
Students moved in Friday to find many new features including a fire suppression system, improved better plumbing, heating and electrical systems, air conditioning and wireless Internet access.
