Washtenaw Technical Middle College Top Scholars

Washtenaw Technical Middle College held its 2011 graduation ceremonies Sunday, May 22 at Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Building. The class included 94 graduates.

Erika Adsit

Parents: Dan and Jill Harshe Adsit

Activities and Awards: Erika graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College with an associate of science degree in general studies in math and natural sciences and an associate of arts degree in liberal arts transfer. She completed 95 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College (WTMC). Erika was involved in WTMC Student Council leadership for two years and participated on the newsletter team. She was also a captain of the WTMC Ultimate Frisbee team. Erika is a National Merit Commended Scholar, National Society of High School Scholars member and a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member. Last summer, she worked as a gymnastics instructor and a campus housing worker.

Plans after graduation: Erika will attend the University of Michigan Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) Honors program.

Audrey Cialek

Parents: Michael and Monica Cialek

Activities and Awards: Audrey graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) with an associate of arts degree in liberal arts transfer and a certificate in Health Care Foundations. She completed 97 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College. She has been accepted into the 2+2 nursing transfer program between WCC and the University of Michigan and is finishing up her first of four years this spring. Audrey has been an English tutor at WCC's Writing Center for two years. In addition, she works and volunteers at Mystic Meadows Farm, and she will spend the summer as a counselor for horse day camps.

Plans after graduation: Audrey will complete the first half of her nursing education by spending next year at WCC. She will then transfer to U of M for two years to complete a bachelor's degree in the science of nursing.

Andrew Glatz

Parents: Ron and Beth Glatz

Activities and Awards: Andrew graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College with a certificate in computer systems technology. He completed 99 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College. He is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He enjoys volunteering every week at the University of Michigan Hospital.

Plans after graduation: Andrew plans to attend the University of Michigan this fall to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Nathan Kaisler

Parents: David and Jean Kaisler

Activities and Awards: Nathan graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College with an associate of science degree in math and science. He completed 95.5 credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout as part of the Boy Scouts of America.

Plans after graduation: Nathan plans to attend the University of Michigan and study biology.

Emily Knafl

Parents: Pam and Paul Knafl

Activities and Awards: Emily received the Bruce Donlap Memorial Scholarship and has been offered a Founder scholarship from Center College, the Ka Imi scholarship from Hawaii's Pacific University, and the Dean's Scholarship from Rollins college. She also received her Girl Scout Gold Award last year and founded a Therapy Dog Program at her local retirement community, consisting of several teams as well as her and the dog she certified and trained herself. During her time at Washtenaw Technical Middle College, she has maintained a 4.0 in her college classes, consistently made the dean's list, joined Phi Theta Kappa and completed an internship at the University of Michigan. Emily graduated summa cum laude with a Health Care Foundations certificate, an associate's degree in occupational studies and a Pharmacy Technology certificate. Outside of school, she enjoys advancing her black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Argentinian tango dancing, Spanish Club and playing piano at the Chelsea Retirement Community.

Plans after graduation: Emily plans to attend either Hawaii's Pacific University or Rollins College in Florida for her undergraduate years. Her dream is to complete medical school and then join a volunteer group such as Doctor's Without Borders or the Smile Train that reaches out and offers medical assistance to the global community.

Mariah Mallett

Parents: Lamont and Kathy Mallett

Activities and Awards: Mariah graduated summa cum laude from Washtenaw Community College with an associate of arts degree in liberal arts. She completed 74 college credits while attending Washtenaw Technical Middle College. She has been on the Dean's High Honor Roll for three consecutive years and is a member of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa. In addition, she earned the RARE Everyday Hero Scholarship. In her free time, Mariah volunteered at the Ypsilanti District Library, the Washtenaw Technical Middle College school office and Food Gatherers, a nonprofit food rescue organization.

Plans after graduation: Mariah will attend the University of Michigan-Dearborn Business School, majoring in accounting and finance.
