Woman freed from wreckage after crash; flown to U-M hospital

By Cindy Heflin

Firefighters freed a woman from the wreckage of her car after a crash in Ypsilanti Township this afternoon. She was flown to University of Michigan Hospital by Survival Flight helicopter in stable condition, Fire Capt. Vic Chevrette said.

The woman was driving south on Rawsonville Road just north of Bemis Road about 2 p.m. when the sedan went off the west side of the road and rolled a few times, Chevrette said.

She was pinned in the wreckage, and firefighters from Ypsilanti and Van Buren townships worked for about 20 minutes using the Jaws of Life to free her, Chevrette said.

Chevrette said the woman was in stable condition when she was flown to the hospital.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the accident, but spokesman Derrick Jackson was not immediately available for comment.

If I remember correctly, having lived at both cross roads, Martz/Bemis the phone was always an Ypsilanti number. Address was also Ypsilanti. The west side of the middle line on Rawsonville is Washtenaw, and the east side of the line is Wayne. South of Bemis might very well be August TWP. I was born on Mc Kean Rd. and that was Willis Mi. and Agusta Twp. Back in the early 50's I can still remember the party line of our first phone, and the number was Hunter 26157. Sumpter Twp. starts further south on Rawsonville. Still I say thank you to all on the scene.

Vic Chevrette is the fire chief in Augusta Township, but he also works for the Ypsilanti Township Fire Department.

It's NEWS! I heard it all go down on the police scanner. Many of my family travel Rawsonville Rd. My sister was traveling south and the road was blocked, the car looked like her granddaughter's. (thank God it was not). Glad to hear the woman is in stable condition, and hope she recovers fully. Thank you to all on the scene that worked so hard to free her.

Covering the bases that is all. Making sure she wasn't drinking, doing drugs or texting. Just another accident that happens.
