Man accused of forcing girlfriend, at gunpoint, to drive him around
A 20-year-old Ypsilanti Township man held a gun on his girlfriend, forcing her to drive him and another person around after an argument Monday at her Ypsilanti apartment, police said.
According to a statement released by the Ypsilanti Police Department, the man and 18-year-old woman were arguing Monday afternoon in the 700 block of Green Road when he pulled out a gun. Police said the man forced the woman to drive him and another person around, threatening to beat her up if she did not comply.
The woman sent text messages to a friend during the incident and that friend called police, according to the statement.
Police said the man and woman had known each other for several years and had been dating for three weeks.
The man and the other person got out of the woman’s car and she was able to leave the area unharmed. The man was arrested without incident in the 700 block of Nash Avenue in Ypsilanti Township, according to police.
The man has been lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail, where he will stay until he is arraigned.

Again - lots of ambiguity here. "drive him and another person around" -- Not a word about the identity of the other person or whether they were accomplice to the act or just found themselves in this potentially deadly situation. I know there's a fine line between objectivity and advocacy journalism, but can't policy makers at AnnArbor.com at least recognize societal standards when producing these stories. This story is about a woman being terrorized and threatened by a man with a gun. "Objectivity" in this case only provokes joking about the incident. Ever hear of "human interest" or victim viewpoint? Eh? And once again, we have this mystery about identifying the subject of the stories AnnArbor.com publishes. We need elucidation, explanation for this (habitual seeming) omission. You identify a doctor accused of a somewhat nebulous charge but don't identify the subjects in stories about violent acts which are quite obviously prosecutable. What's up with that?

No one has been identified in this story because charges have not yet been filed. In general, we don't identify suspects before they're charged.

When did I become the rhetoric teacher around here? Both the headline and the lead are mis-written, such that it sounds as though "the man" forced his girlfriend to drive him around at gunpoint -- as in, "You take this gun, point it at me, and drive me around!" Stay after school and write 100 times, "I will not confuse verb clause and object," or something. Actually, don't. You've written enough for one day. Or better yet, write "Romans go home" all over the amphitheater.

The headline and first sentence have been changed to clarify.

That's the way it reads to me as well. It did make for an amusing mental picture, though.

When he looks back on this incident, I suspect that he will decide calling a cab would have been cheaper.

Sometimes texting while driving is a good thing.

Nash Ave, is in West Willow right? Great job, Ypsilanti Police! Congrats to the woman for sending text messages to her friend. (even while she was driving) in this case. On one hand, I wonder if the gun was a stolen one, on the other hand, it makes me furious.

I can't make up mind about this story. One the hand, it reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood. On the other hand, it makes me think of Pinocchio.
