Police: UPS employee caught stealing iPhone from shipment

By Danielle Arndt

A UPS employee was caught stealing an Apple iPhone from a shipment Tuesday, police said.

The Ypsilanti Police Department was called to the UPS Customer Center at 540 S. Mansfield St. around 8:50 a.m.

After being interviewed by the business’ security and Ypsilanti police officers, the employee admitted to stealing the phone.

Not much information here, such as how the employee was caught. I've had terrible experiences with UPS and will only use FedEx for packages. Most recently, I had a package mailed via UPS (not my choice) and the delivery person left a slip indicating the delivery ( I was not home). The slip said a second attempt would be made the next day between 8 am and 10:30 am (one of several timeframe options). I would not be home at that time either, so I called to make arrangements for a different time/day for delivery. After 45 minutes on the line with a supervisor, I was told that it was impossible to change the time to later (5 pm -7 pm) the next day, even though those are regular delivery hours and that was one of the options on the slip. I kept saying I would not be home from 8 am to 10:30 am on any weekday, and the supervisor kept telling me that the envelope was sent with a morning delivery paid for, and that could not be changed, even if it was fine with me that it was delivered later when I was home! I kept saying I was fine with the later delivery, I didn't need it in the morning, and I would not be there to receive it in the morning. The supervisor said if I was not there the next day in the morning, then another slip would be left for the following day to be delivered between 8 am and 10:30 am. He said I could drive to Ypsi to pick it up, or I could schedule for a different day and time for a charge of $4.00. This was completely ludicrous, and I was furious at the inflexibility of UPS. This was a catch 22! He asked me to drive to Ypsi instead of bringing it later in the day when I would be home. I finally said to send it back to the sender, since I was not home from 8 - 10:30 am on any weekday. Totally unbelievable. I have had several other similarly ludicrous conversations with UPS, and would never use them under any circumstance to mail anything. FedEx, on the other hand has always been accommodating and gone out of their way to deliver when I was home.

Just this past summer, was sitting on my front porch. Watched a ups brown truck pull up across the street and go up two steps of a duplex of thirteen stairs and throw the box towards the door. No comment!! I know when I mail to a family member... I let them know who has the box and they watch for the delivery. No throwing on the other end...

Has to be isolated, and I'd guess a temporary holiday employee. I think security is extremely tight for both UPS and FedEx. I've had nothing but outstanding and professional service from both shippers. The USPS- totally different story. Shut 'em down. Let FedEx or Brown deliver our mail.

The service I receive from my USPS carrier and office is as good as UPS or Fed Ex. UPS and Fed Ex will not deliver to many thousands of homes in the USA. THE USPS is constitutionally mandated, in this case The Founders knew how important post is to a civilized society and got it right.

Personally, I have had nothing but excellent customer service from UPS drivers in this community. Friendly, cheerful and accommodating (in bringing heavy boxes inside, for example), even during the holiday rush season. Never had a missing or damaged delivery. Just sayin'.

I agree; the drivers I've had are great people. I have to sign for monthly deliveries and my driver will return later in the afternoon if need be to get my signature and deliver. Very professional and friendly.

Is the slogan "What can brown do for you" or "What can brown do for me"?

Perhaps he had intentions of stealing it first then recovering it and returning it to it's rightful owner to collect a reward.

As if collecting a bogus reward is a lesser evil?

This happens more than you would think... along with UPS employees throwing boxes from long distances to your doorstep. Just watch youtube ups videos.

I am disappointed, why are so many people so desperate? With so many needing jobs, I believe this person just LOST his.
