Ypsilanti woman to appear Tuesday on Judge Joe Brown TV show for 'couch surfing'

Judge Joe Brown
From judgejoebrown.com
Couch surfing is when an individual stays at a friend's or acquaintance's house in lieu of permanent housing.
According to the summary on Brown’s website, the appearance is a result of the woman “couch surfing” at the plaintiff's residence.
The plaintiff is seeking reimbursement for rent and a damaged couch.
The Ypsilanti woman - who isn't named (so far) - says free driving lessons and car more than paid for what was owed in rent.
Judge Joe Brown airs on CW50 at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

I'll never foret the episode in which a dad was suing his son for an unpaid loan of $700. When the Judge asked what the "loan" was for the dad said "to buy a pound of weed he was supposed to sell for a profit". The Judge merely asked him if there were any more felonies he wanted to admit to before he threw them out of the court.

I'm guessing the next step for local media will be links to photos of Washtenaw County residents whose image shows up on one of those mug shot sites. We're stooping pretty low here, folks.

whats sad? Capitalism at its best. A win win. Only the advertisers for the show run a risk of not getting a return on their investment.

If a guest doesn't leave your house you ask them nicely and then call the police. The police will make them leave. Its like we are living in the twighlight zone.

Unfortunately Tonya is correct. What you thought was helping out a friend turns into a couple thousand dollars in attorney and legal fees that can spread over months.

Once you allow someone to live in your house for a short period of time and they establish residency, the only way to get them out is by evicting them and having a judge say they have to go!

It's not like it was when this show was first on and they threw them into a caged tag team death match with Dick The Bruiser and The Sheik. Live TV, too.

after a little Googling it seems both "contestants" will likely walk away a little richer for the experience. It doesn't seem anyone pays anything out of pocket on these shows. There is a "slush fund" that covers any judgement and even the loser will walk away in the black.

Both of these comments are taking the fun right out of watching this stuff. Next they are going to say Jerry Springer is scripted and reality shows aren't real.

The old show "People's Court," which may have been the first of this genre, worked that way. Both parties are paid for their appearance on the show (union scale, maybe?), and any money awarded to the winner comes out of the loser's pay. That's how they get them to drop their court case and go on the show instead. No matter what happens, you're going to end up with some money, which is much better (for the loser, at least) than what could happen in court.
