Top six: fashion accessories for spring and where to find them in Ann Arbor

By Angela Smith

As the balmy Michigan weather keeps flirting with us, it’s time for me to start rotating out the winter clothes for the summer clothes. Every year I do it, and every year Mother Nature Strikes back with a day for flannel and fleece. But as a born and bred Michigander, I need sandals and shorts when the temperature rises above 70 for three consecutive days.

Inevitably, as I go through my clothing from seasons past I find the need to donate and get rid of some items (like that favorite shirt I held on to from my last pregnancy). I also feel a strong desire to add a few new spring apparel items to my collection. After all, isn’t that what spring is all about: a fresh, new, brightly colored end to the drab winter grays — they are talking about my wardrobe here.

I’m not interested in buying up a trendy new spring wardrobe. Just a few cheery impact items. I found an online article titled “The Only 6 Accessories You’ll Need This Spring.” Perfect. Accessories are the ideal way to update a wardrobe without spending too much money. I am not sure I can pull off all of these, but here they are for your consideration.

1. A breezy scarf I like a scarf to dress up khakis and a t-shirt, from casual to work appropriate in two seconds. I also may choose this instead of a jacket to substitute for an extra layer in case that blustery wind current picks up again. Orchid Lane is the go to place for lovely fabrics with amazing versatility. Shop right and you could end up with a $15 scarf that doubles as pants or a dress!

2. Bright handbags

Yes a bright purse is just the thing to add oomph, and these days they can be found big enough to make a real statement. A bold colored carryall will brighten your mood and may even help to keep you organized. Check out the gorgeous selection of vivid handmade bags in every size and style at Ten Thousand Villages.

3. A Straw fedora Seriously? A straw fedora? I don’t get it, but apparently celebs like Lindsay Lohan do. I haven’t seen any straw fedoras on sale locally (do let me know if you spot one), but the mall’s Forever 21 comes close with their basketweave fedora.

4. Nude heels Yes, I love nude-colored heels, they go with everything, from the outrageous getups on Dancing with the Stars to a simple floral jumper. You can find the perfect pair at Sole Sisters, Van Boven, or by sifting through the clearance shoe room at Von Maur.

5. Classic trench Do you have a trenchcoat you have owned for years? A timeless addition in a basic color will serve you well, but if you think it is time to update it, you might want to try Target for style selection and price. I picked up a vivid violet one that catches many a compliment.

6. A neon watch Oh drat! I knew I should have held onto my Swatches from the '80s. If you didn’t and you find yourself missing that neon piece of arm candy, try one of these from Urban Outfitters for a wakeup call that will not be ignored.

Yes, I would rather wear one of your fedoras than the one linked in the article, Spooner. I love local connection and the bright colors. You must love to crochet!

Hi Angela My name is Spooner. I have been crocheting for a living in Ann Arbor for 40 years. I sell fedoras and many other styles of hats as well as bright bags, shorts, scarves, etc. You can see my art apparel on my dot com site thesecurityblanketco. I am also available around town in person. I'm the guy with the bright crocheted clothes. I'd love to talk with you, or just about anybody, about my art. Hope to see you soon. Spooner
