Athletes to Know: Dexter wrestler Drew Barnes and Skyline bowler Bea Alencart

This week's Athletes to Know features Skyline bowler Bea Alencart, a Brazilian foreign exchange student, and Dexter wrestler Drew Barnes, who recently committed to a college program.

Drew Barnes

School: Dexter.

Grade: Senior.

Sport: Wrestling.

Accomplishment: Barnes is 23-2, with both losses coming in the first two weeks of the season. He took first place at the Dan Taylor Memorial Tournament at Hillsdale High School two weeks ago and went 5-0 at last week's Dexter Invitational, where he was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler. Barnes placed fourth at the Division 2 state finals (152 pounds) as a junior and is currently the No. 2-ranked Division 2 wrestler at 160 pounds, according to MichiganGrappler.com.

Other interests: Helping coach younger wrestlers and spending time with his girlfriend.

Favorite subject: Biology.

What's on his iPod: Adele, Drake, My Morning Jacket and techno.

Future plans: Will be attending Alma College next fall and will continue his wrestling career with the newly-started program. Plans to major in business with a minor in biology.

Coach Greg Wagner says: "His work ethic in the room is great. He is a great example for the other guys in the room."


Bea Alencart

School: Skyline.

Grade: Junior.

Sport: Bowling.

Accomplishment: A foreign exchange student from Sao Bernardo Do Campo, Brazil Alencart has doubled her average to a 133 in her first two months with the team.

Favorite subject: Math.

What's on her iPod: Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Favorite thing about the U.S: "The snow. I don't have cold weather in Brazil. I like sledding."

Future plans: To return home to Brazil and finish high school before going to college. Alencart has not decided what she will study in college.

Coach Merritt Schiffler says: "She has really embraced Skyline and has made many friends."
