EMU basketball team faces various MAC Tournament scenarios if it wins at Toledo on Saturday

By Rich Rezler

Ready for some mental calisthenics to start your weekend?

Check out the Eastern Michigan basketball team’s scenarios for the Mid-American Conference Tournament entering its regular season finale at Toledo at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The top four teams in the final conference standings receive a bye into the quarterfinals of the tournament, held March 7-10 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

The remaining eight teams play on-campus games on Monday to fill out the quarterfinal matchups.

If the Eagles (14-16, 9-6) finish their season with a win at Toledo, they can still finish anywhere from the No. 3 to No. 5 seed, depending on how other games play out.

A loss on Saturday makes things simple: EMU would be the No. 5 seed and host No. 12 Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. Monday.

Other Saturday games that impact EMU’s future include Ohio at Miami (noon) and Bowling Green at Buffalo (6 p.m.). Kent State’s 61-55 loss to Akron on Friday night eliminated several other scenarios.

The school’s sports information department has charted out the scenarios that involve an Eagles’ win:

  • EMU and Bowling Green win. Ohio loses. EMU is No. 3 seed.
  • EMU wins. Bowling Green and Ohio lose. EMU is No. 4 seed.
  • EMU and Ohio win. Bowling Green loses. EMU is No. 5 seed.
  • EMU, Ohio and Bowling Green win. EMU is No. 5 seed.
