Gaelic football on display Saturday at Saline's Celtic Festival
At some point in the techno song playing in the background of “Gaelic Football: The Original Beautiful Game,” an excellent video primer of the sport, a distorted voice repeats the phrase “you can do anything.”
The song is a fitting selection, because "you can do anything" is a relatively accurate description of Gaelic football, an ancient game that has elements of soccer, rugby, football and basketball.
On Saturday, in the midst of Saline’s Celtic Festival, Gaelic football will be on full display at Saline High School’s football field. The Detroit Wolfetones take on Cleveland St. Pats at 3:30 p.m.
The Wolfetones were established in 1981 by current team chairman Brenden Murray’s father, Tom, along with his three brothers.
While the team is based in Canton, the Wolfetones have some Ann Arbor connections. Tom Murray happens to be the owner of Conor O’Neill’s and is still a strong supporter of the team.
For those looking to experience an old sport for the first time, Saline High School on Saturday is a good bet. Admission is free.
