Sarah Hoffman takes 5-shot lead in Ann Arbor Women's Golf Championship

Taylor Hansen is no stranger to competitive golf. As a sophomore at Chelsea High School, she was the No. 2 golfer for a Bulldogs team that finished fifth in the state in Division 3 this year. Saturday, the 15-year-old became one of the youngest competitors in the 20-year history of the Ann Arbor Women’s Golf Championship.

For Hansen, who shot a first-round 98, it was her first competitive tournament outside of high school play. She’ll compete in the second flight in Sunday’s final round.

“It was a little different (than playing high school tournaments), because I’m not playing with people my age,” Hansen said. “I think I did pretty good. I could’ve played a little better, had a few less putts, but overall I think I played pretty well.”

Sarah Hoffman, the 2009 champion, holds a five-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes. Hoffman, a second-team All American at Grand Valley State, fired a one-under par 71, her first-ever sub-par competitive round.

“I didn’t hit the ball as well as I could have, but I scrambled pretty well,” she said. “I need to keep making putts and attacking the pin and playing smart.”

Alicia Zuckerman is in second place after shooting 76. Zuckerman, who took third in last year’s event, was happy with her round, but said she needs to shore up her short game in today’s round.

Stephene Medaugh, who’s also played in the city’s senior championship, is third at 79. Zuckerman and Medaugh will join Hoffman in the final round. The trio played together Saturday as well.
