2009 All-Washtenaw County Field Hockey Team
Field hockey is the fourth in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the fall sports season.

Melanie Askari (sr., M), Huron: Askari led Huron in assists with nine, and also scored three. Though it may not show up in the boxscore, Askari's lethal shots often led to rebounds and corners that created scoring opportunities for the River Rats. A team co-captain, she was an All-State selection and is strongly considering playing in college, but is still undecided.
Margaret Burns (jr., F), Pioneer: Burns was a shot of life off the bench for the Pioneers and excelled in the 12th (wo)man role. She led her team with 18 goals despite not being in the starting lineup much of the time.
Miranda Dershimer (sr., M), Greenhills: The two-time first division All-State midfielder was the MVP and captain of the Greenhills squad. A four-year varsity player, Dershimer will continue her playing career at the college level, but has yet to decide where. "She's a hard worker, definitely one of the top players in the league," said Greenhills coach Tom Weinfurther.
Alyse Embree (sr., M/F), Huron: Played a significant role in the Huron attack with eight goals and four assists on the season. The midfielder/forward earned All-State honorable mention.
Kelsey Gradwohl (so., F), Huron: A pure finisher up top, Gradwohl was second in goals for the for the high-powered River Rat offense with 11. Her knack for the net earned her All-State recognition, and she's the only sophomore to make the All-County team.
Emy Guttman (jr., F), Pioneer: The diminutive Pioneer forward had a nose for the goal and unmatched strength on the ball when in possession. The bigger the stage, the more Guttman elevated her game. She was second on the team with 15 goals, including her team's final three of the season: A game-winner in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Birmingham Marian in the state semifinals and both goals in a 2-0 win over Huron in the finals. An All-State selection.
Emma Hamstra (jr., GK), Pioneer: The Pioneer netminder didn't surrender a goal until the fifth game of the season. She finished with 11 shutouts and only once allowed more than single goal in a game the entire season. With a stellar defense in front of her, Hamstra was often untested, but shone brightest when her team needed her the most with a 13-save (11 in the first half) shutout performance in the state finals.
Ainsley McCallister (sr., M/F), Huron: Though the 17-2-1 River Rats came up short in the state finals, it wasn't due to a lack of production from team co-captain McAllister. She led Huron with 18 goals and also contributed seven assists. The two-time All-State midfielder/forward will continue her career at the University of Michigan in the fall.
Rachel Nyberg (sr., D), Saline: The speedy senior defender anchored a Saline defense that recorded 10 shutouts and didn't allow a single goal in Division 3 play. Nyberg was a team co-captain, and a Division 3 All-State selection.
Allie Stein (sr., F), Pioneer: If Stein and Guttman switched jerseys at halftime, most people wouldn't notice. Not only are the forwards similar in stature, but the aggressiveness with which they attack the goal made them sometimes indecipherable. Stein, a senior co-captain scored 10 goals on the season and was an All-State selection.
Kelsey Thompson (sr., M/D): Pioneer: One of just three players in Pioneer history to play four seasons on varsity, the senior co-captain and AnnArbor.com Player of the Year was a state champ every year. Thompson's contributions were felt all over the field for the Pioneers, leading the defense, controlling the midfield, distributing nine assists, inbounding on corners, and even scoring four goals, including one of the game-tying variety against Marian in the state semifinals. Thompson will continue her career at the Division I level at either Northwestern, Michigan or an Ivy League school.
Grace Wilson (jr., M/F), Pioneer: The speedy forward/midfielder earned All-State recognition and was a pain in opposing defense's sides. Her side-to-side quickness coupled with pure up-and-down speed made her a scoring threat every time the ball was near, as evidenced by her nine goals and nine assists. Her aggressive defense in the offensive third and make-up speed helped stop the opposition's counterattack and create scoring opportunities for Pioneer off of turnovers in the other team's end.

Don Hes, Saline: The Hornets won their second straight division championship and will move up a level (from Division 3 to 2) for the second time in the program's three years of existence. Since having just one win in his first year at the helm, Hes' squads have put together back-to-back 10-win seasons and went undefeated and unscored upon in 10 division games this season.
