Pioneer boys pull out two-point win over Belleville and more Tuesday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A buzzer beating 3-pointer made the final score a little closer than the game may have actually been, but Pioneer coach Rex Stanczak tipped his cap to Belleville in a 56-54 win regardless.

"They made some tough shots in the fourth quarter," Stanczak said.

Pioneer (5-3) trailed 27-25 at halftime, but led by nine heading into the fourth after a 21-10 third quarter. Stanczak said it was his team's best quarter of basketball all season.

"They really took it to us in the second. We went full court man (out of the break) and I thought our guys responded well out of the locker room on both ends of the floor," Stanczak said. "We just did a lot of things we want to do as a team."

Ja'Korey Davis led Pioneer in scoring with 15 pointsJibreel Hussein had 14, while Ethan Spencer had 11 points in what Stanczak said was the best game of his career. Belleville's Jamie Pearson had a game-high 23 points despite the Pioneers attempting to take away his biggest asset: the 3-point shot.

"It was an impressive 23," Stanczak said. "We ran him away from the arc, forced him to do it elsewhere and he made a lot of floaters in the lane."

ORCHARD LAKE ST. MARYS 53, FATHER GABRIEL RICHARD 51

Kamari Davis tied the game 51-51 with 1:15 with a pair of free throws and had a chance to give Richard its first win in Catholic League play this season. After Orchard Lake St. Mary's successfully ran down the clock and took the lead with a shot from the elbow, Davis received an inbound with 2.1 seconds left.

Though he got a good look at a shot just outside of the 3-point arc, it wasn't quite good enough. The shot rattled the rim, but didn't fall for the Irish (2-5, 0-1)

"(The shot) was everything but in," Richard coach Pete Schoch said.
