Dexter field hockey player Sarah Prielipp and Greenhills tennis player Sam Markel
This week's Athletes to Know features Dexter field hockey player Sarah Prielipp and Greenhills tennis player Sam Markel.

Sam Markel
Class: Senior.
Sport: Tennis.
Accomplishment: Markel and his partner, Adhi Rajaprabhakaran, currently have a 13-2 record at No. 3 doubles for the Gryhpons, who are ranked second in the state in Division 4.
Favorite athlete: Roger Federer. “His game is just so perfect,” Markel says.
Favorite music: Led Zepplin, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Eminem.
Other hobbies: Music. Markel plays bass for Sam and the Shoeless, a band hoping to break though at this year’s Breakin' Curfew at The Neutral Zone.
Superstition: “I always wear long socks, I can’t play matches in short socks,” says Markel.
Goals for this season: "I want to win states. I know it's ambitious, but I think we have what it takes," Markel says.
Coach Eric Gajar says: “Sam is the ultimate team player. He put in his time and has done everything asked of him. He’s finally getting to play full-time for us as a senior and he's taking advantage of the opportunity. Last season, at team regionals, a player for Grosse Pointe (University) Liggett was in violation of MHSAA’s uniform code, he wasn't going to get to compete. Sam literally gave the kid his own shorts so he could play. I think that says a lot about him.”

Sarah Prielipp
Class: Senior.
Sport: Field hockey.
Accomplishment: Prielipp is a four-year starting goalie -- her freshman and sophomore years as a member of the Washtenaw Whippets -- and a captain on this year’s team. The Dreadnuaghts are undefeated in Division 4 play and Prielipp is sporting an 82-percent save percentage and averaging just 1.14 goals-against for the 4-3 Dexter squad. She recently had a shutout in a 2-0 win over Detroit Country Day.
Favorite athlete: Maureen Tasch, who attended Pioneer and played goalie for the 2001 national championship Michigan team.
Favorite music: Adele, Matt & Kim and Marianas Trench.
Goals for the season: "Personally, I want to have the majority of my games be shutouts this year. My team goal is for us to win states in Division 4," Prielipp says.
Future plans: Prielipp is planning to enlist in the Navy, where she will pursue either law enforcement or something in the medical field. It's something I've always wanted to do. It will give me the opportunity to travel the world," she says.
Coach Craig Flocken says: "Sarah is extremely coachable. She has a personality that coaches love to have on the team. She brings players together and really loves the game of field hockey."
