In its final Southeastern Conference match before district play begins next week, the Dexter High School volleyball team earned a closely-fought, four-set victory (27-25, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25) over Chelsea on senior night Tuesday at Chelsea High School.

The two teams also staged their third annual “Volley for the Cure” event, as fans, participants, and the Chelsea gymnasium were all festooned in pink, raising money and awareness towards a cure for breast cancer. The crowd from both schools was large and lively, decked out in pink, and holding their breath as prizes were raffled off and volleys were showcased.

In the match, the Dreadnaughts steadily built a lead in the first set, leading 20-15 at one point, before Chelsea made a late comeback, tying the game at 25. Dexter’s Talia Woods, however, backed off her usual spike kill and dinked a soft shot over Chelsea blockers to win 27-25.

But the momentum of the Bulldogs’ first set comeback carried over to the second set, which Chelsea won 25-22 to even the match.

Dexter won the third set more comfortably, 25-17. The Dreadnaughts then scratched out another tight win in the fourth set, 27-25, thanks in large part to the aggressive hitting of Caitlen Foote.
