Greenhills golfer Henry Do shoots a 65, Huron's Alex Wunderlich wins districts and more notes
Several Washtenaw County golfers and teams will attempt to qualify for their respective state finals on Thursday and Friday. But it’s hard to imagine any could do as well as Henry Do did in a district tournament last week.
The Greenhills School sophomore shot a 6-under-par 65 at Woodlawn Golf Club in Adrian to claim medalist honors. Do’s spectacular round was one stroke shy of the course record and 10 strokes better than his nearest competition, Dan Lamprecht-Carson of Adrian Madison.

Woodlawn course manager Jamie Wilson said the talk in the pro shop before the tournament was that Do -- nor any other golfer in the field -- was capable of shooting under 73.
“That kid’s pretty amazing,” said Wilson, who has shot 65 three times himself. PGA professional David Horstman shot the course record -- to Wilson’s recollection -- in 1990 or 1991.
Wilson credits his own familiarity with the course for his low rounds. That Do was on a relatively unfamiliar course made the score all the more remarkable in Wilson’s eyes.
“I’ve been around Woodlawn a long time and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a high schooler come close to that," Wilson said. "Especially not one who has barely ever played the course."
Greenhills won the district tournament with a team score of 315 and will compete in a Division 4 regional Thursday at Westwynd Golf Course in Rochester.
The top three teams and the top three individual finishers not on a qualifying team advance to the state finals at The Meadows in Allendale on June 17-18.
Washtenaw County golfers will compete in regional rounds in all four MHSAA divisions this week. At districts, the top six teams and the top six individuals from non-qualifying schools advanced. At regionals, the competition stiffens up. Only the top three teams and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams advancing.
Here is a breakdown of local teams and individuals playing in regionals:

Huron won its Division 1 district at Whispering Willows Municipal Golf Course in Livonia with a team score of 305, two better than second-place Plymouth and Livonia Churchill. Saline advanced to regionals with a fourth-place finish (314), as did Skyline by finishing in sixth (326).
Huron senior Alex Wunderlich took home medalist honors with a 2-over-par 72, one better than Plymouth’s Justin Bauer.
Qualifying as individuals were Pioneer’s Davis Ransdell, Eric Miller and Nick Margolis, and Ypsilanti’s Jacob Sewell and Brian Pierson.
Qualifying teams and individuals will play at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor on Thursday.
BEATING UP ON THE BOYS
Whitmore Lake’s Emma Salata finished third among players not on a regional-qualifying team, putting her through to the regional round of competition, which will be at Rustic Glenn in Saline on Friday.
Salata played for the girls team at Father Gabriel Richard as a freshman, but since transferring to Whitmore Lake -- which doesn’t have a girls team -- has played against the boys.
“It really has become normal for me, I go out there every match and it just doesn’t feel any different, that’s my competition and that’s who I play,” said Salata, whose 240-yard drives stood out against her female competition, but do for the wrong reason against her male counterparts. “I just remind myself that they’re always going to hit further, I just have to be better at other part of my game and my scores will be comparable.”
Salata wasn’t very happy with her round of 85 at Grosse Ile last weekend, but is pretty familiar with Rustic Glenn and confident she can improve her score at regionals.
“If I play well, I’ll have a shot, but I would really need to perform at my best,” Salata said.
Salata’s teammate Anthony Manschesky also qualified as an individual and Manchester (2nd, 343) and Father Gabriel Richard (6th, 354) qualified as teams.
DREADS AND BULLDOGS ADVANCE
Dexter junior Ryan Shoner fell one stroke shy of medalist honors at the Division 2 district at Marywood Golf Course in Battle Creek, as Tecumseh’s Joe Forest shot a 76 to take first place.
The Dreadnaughts edged the Indians in the team standings, however, beating Tecumseh 317-323 to take first place. Chelsea advanced to regionals with a fourth-place (341) finish.
The Bulldogs and Dreadnaughts will play in a regional at Grosse Ile Country Club on Thursday.
