Huron's Mike Lewis, Ypsilanti's Tristan Simmons earn All-State basketball honorable mention

Huron High School senior Mike Lewis and Ypsilanti senior Tristan Simmons are honorable mention performers on The Associated Press Class A All-State basketball team released Friday.

Lewis a 6-foot-5 power forward, averaged 16.9 points and 11 rebounds for the River Rats. Strong inside with a solid mid-range game, Lewis also proved to be dangerous from outside this season with 35 3-pointers.

Simmons (6-3) averaged 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds for the Phoenix, which finished the regular season ranked No. 9 in the state. He reached double-digit scoring totals in every Ypsilanti game.

The AP released its All-State teams by class this week. Players of the Year included Mike Costello of Bay City Western (Class A), Denzel Valentine of Lansing Sexton (Class B), Monte Morris of Flint Beecher (Class C) and Chris Hass of Pellston (Class D).

Not only is Mike Lewis an excellent basketball player, he is an excellent young man. My son played with Mike over the last two years, so I got to witness first hand his humble leadership on & off the court. He also is an impressive scholar. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
