The scoreboard, however, could’ve read: Barera 4, Flat Rock 0.
The senior forward scored his fifth goal of the night in the second half, anchoring the Fighting Irish to a 7-1 rout over the Rams in a Division 3 boys soccer district semifinal Tuesday at Father Gabriel Richard High School.
“We got off to a fast start,” said Irish coach Mike Mistaleski, who shuffled bench players in during the second half. “(The) bench got to play a lot and we got to have a lot of fun.”
Barera especially, as his fourth goal placed him as the school’s all-time leader in goals with 43, surpassing Michael Tabers’ previous record of 42 set last season.
“It’s pretty surreal just imagining that you’re on top of the leaderboard now with some of the players that you really admire,” said Barera. “It’s just great. To be considered as good as some of the players I’ve played with is a real honor. I can’t really explain how happy I am.”
Barera wasted no time initiating his career-day, scoring three times in three-minute intervals, netting goals at the three-, six-, and nine-minute marks to put Richard up 3-0.
