Pioneer crew wins combined regatta crown; Huron girls place second, Saline boys third
The Pioneer girls crew team celebrates its first place finish at Wyandotte Roosevelt High School's Hebda Memorial Challenge.
WYANDOTTE - There were 12 races at the Wyandotte Roosevelt’s crew regatta Hebda on Saturday. Six for the girls boats, six for the guys.
Pioneer never finished worse than second in all 12 races and finished first in combined points.
The girls had five first places and one runner up and the men had five runners up and one champion at the Hebda Memorial Challenge. As a team, Pioneer also won the girls overall points competition. The boys finished behind Orchard Lake St. Mary’s won the boy’s side.
The Pioneer girls won the Novice 4 (rowers in a boat), Junior 8, Varsity 4, Novice 8, and
Pioneer won the combined trophy after a second place finish by the boys team.
“It was a pretty dominant show by the girls,” said Pioneer coach Rich Griffith. “The novice boats that won, I was very happy with those, the men’s novice as well and the men’s junior 8 really stepped it up.”
Huron finished in second on the women’s side and the Saline boys placed third.
Pioneer will participate in a rare tri-meet with Rockford and St. Mary’s at Orchard Lake next weekend.
“Then we’ll really know where we stand with fastest people in the state,” Griffith said.

Pioneer, Rockford and St. Mary's will also be racing Ann Arbor Skyline's new novice team this weekend in the quad meet.
