'Splitter Nation' secures Lincoln vs. Huron's spot as high school Game of the Week

When the Lincoln High School football team travels to Riverbank Stadium to take on Huron on Friday, it will be the AnnArbor.com Game of the Week after garnering 739 of 1,050 (70.4 percent) of votes cast in this week’s poll.
The high volume of votes for the game was no doubt driven by Lincoln’s student fan group, the Splitter Nation, which took to Twitter and Facebook promoting the game this week.
“Our people are crazy,” said Lincoln football coach and interim athletic director Chris Westfall. “I’ve learned the power of Twitter. I just put it out there and they go nuts.”
The game beat out matchups between Pioneer and defending Division 2 state champion Birmingham Brother Rice (151 votes, 14.4 percent), Southeastern Conference cross-divisional foes Dexter and Skyline (103 votes, 9.8 percent); and Chelsea’s game against Division 3 state power, East Lansing (57 votes, 5.4 percent).
It wasn’t long ago that Splitter Nation basically consisted of a sparse amount of students more interested in games on their cell phones than on the field. Sparked by last year’s playoff run by the football team, though, it has become the buzz of the school, according to Westfall.
“They just had so much fun doing it last year, I can’t tell you how many kids I had coming up to me last year saying they wanted to get involved in Splitter Nation,” Westfall said.
And the AnnArbor.com game of the Week Poll isn’t the only place fans have been voting. Westfall noticed the game was a nominee in the Local 4 Friday Football Frenzy poll on Monday, put a tweet out to his 200 followers on Twitter and within an hour more than 1,000 additional votes had been cast for Lincoln’s game.
The Lincoln vs. Huron game had 5,564 votes by Thursday night, more than double its closest competition.
“When I tweeted that last night we were in third place in the Local 4 poll,” Westfall said. “It just shows how much this community is rallying around the ‘Nation’. Our fan base is just incredible.”
Though Lincoln doesn’t play a home game until Week 4, the Splitter Nation has organized fan buses for every away game. It was standing room only at the away side bleachers in Belleville last week, and Westfall expects the same at Huron and every game thereafter.
As for Game of the Week voting?
“Don’t put us in the poll unless you want to be at our game,” Wesfall said. “Our fan base is crazy, they’ll make sure we win every time.”

Lincoln fans, (including the coach) seem to be counting this game in the win column a little too early..... careful not to get too far ahead of yourselves. Not sure how good Huron is but, this hype seems a little over the top. Huron just might pull the upset.
