In a classic Saturday Night Live skit, Chicago superfans argue about the “da-Bulls’” dynasty and predict “a minimum eight-peat,” when talking to Michael Jordan.

A similarly ludicrous number of championships have emerged from a Division 4 boys tennis regional over the past nine seasons, with eight team state champions coming out of the regional that Greenhills will host on Thursday.

Greenhills has won five of those eight, with Grosse Ile breaking up any “da-Bulls” type dynasty with championships in 2005 and 2007. Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett won in 2002.

With three of the top four teams in the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Associations Division 4 poll playing at Greenhills today, the trend is likely to continue.

“I don’t really pay attention to (the rankings) but seven out of eight or eight of nine, whatever it is, that sort of thing is unheard of,” said Greenhills coach Eric Gajar.

Greenhills would have to massively underplay its seeds in every flight to not advance out of the regional (top two teams, No. 1 singles champions and any team to score 10 points advance to the state finals), but Gajar stressed the importance of his players being on top of their game.

“(The other teams) are in the underdog roll, they have nothing to lose when they face us and I think we're going to get their best at all times,” Gajar said. “If we're looking past any of them at all, we’ll be in trouble.”

Greenhills No. 1 singles player, John Adams, said he and his teammates realize how vital performance at the regional tournament can be to their state title defense.

“What we do at the regional is going to directly effect our seeds and what we do at states,” Adams said. “We know we need to perform our best and play well.” BOYS TENNIS REGIONALS

DIVISION 1< Where: Plymouth-Canton Educational Park When: Friday, 9 a.m. Local teams: Huron, Pioneer, Saline. Breakdown: The only realistic chance any team in this regional has of finishing ahead of Pioneer and Huron would be to sabotage their team buses. Saline is very good, and could likely emerge as a third qualifier by collecting the minimum 18 points in a 16-team draw. For this to happen, first round matches - most often worth double points due to a massive amount of byes - will be paramount to the Hornets’ success.

DIVISION 2 Where: Allen Park High School When: Today, 9 a.m. Local teams: Ypsilanti, Lincoln Breakdown: This regional is not particularly strong, so even younger teams with limited success - like Ypsilanti and Lincoln - have an outside chance of advancement.

Where: North Farmington High School When: Today, 9 a.m. Local teams: Skyline, Dexter Breakdown: No. 4-ranked Rochester Adams No. 8 North Farmington will be the teams to beat.

DIVISION 3 Where: Chelsea High School When: Today, 9 a.m. Local teams: Chelsea, Milan. Breakdown: Chelsea, the Southeastern Conference White Division champions, should be able to advance with Parma Western, ranked No. 7 in Division 3, the team to beat.

DIVISION 4 Where: Greenhills School When: Today, 9 a.m. Local teams: Father Gabriel Richard, Greenhills. Breakdown: Three of the top four ranked teams in the state - Greenhills (No. 1), Grosse Ile (No. 3) and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett (No. 4) - will participate. With just eight teams in the field, only 10 points are needed to advance, but those points will be extremely tough to come by.
