TEMPERANCE -- After a rain-riddled, scoreless first half, the Huron High School girls soccer team and its Southeastern Conference Red Division foe Temperance Bedford were both looking for an edge.

The River Rats claimed it when Jordan Chick scored a goal 21 minutes into the second half. It was all Huron needed in its 1-0 road victory Tuesday.

Huron goalkeeper Michele Freed, who finished with six saves in the shutout, staved off an early scoring opportunity by the Kicking Mules.

"(Freed) actually was able to come out and tip the ball over the cross bar," Huron coach Reese Richardson said. "(Bedford) got a breakaway, Michelle came out, got the ball and that gave all of us a sigh of relief."

From then on, it was quiet until Chick headed a ball into the corner of Bedford's net off a free kick.

"Overall, we did a great job just keeping possession," Richardson said.

The River Rats (8-3-1, 5-1-0) had eight shots on goal, while Bedford had six.

Richardson said Huron is seeing improvements in teamwork and ball possession that they worked on earlier this season.

"We've taken our share of knocks early," he said. "But it was to prepare for the postseason and our SEC Red games."

BOYS LACROSSE
Pioneer 7, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood 5: The Pioneers (7-6) led 6-2 heading into the fourth quarter and fended off a late surge by the Cranes to hold on for the road win. "(Crabrook) made a run, mostly on transition," said Pioneer coach Darren Millman, who credited his defense and goalie Mike Jones for stopping the run. "Our defense kept playing solid and Mike made some big stops. He stepped up big." Jones finished with 14 saves. On offense, Pioneer's Dylan Swanson scored a game-high four goals, all coming in the first half. (Boxscore)

Saline 18, Romulus 0: The Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead and never let up in a commanding road win. "We don't start very slowly," said Saline coach Matt Ceo, whose team led 12-0 by halftime. "Sometimes that can be overwhelming for teams that are just putting things together and trying to get kids out." Saline (8-3) had 10 different goal scorers, led by four from Kyle Harris. T.J. Braun scored three goals and Sam Berry, Cam Frotten and Ryan Mickevicius added two apiece. The Hornets used three goalies in the shutout. (Boxscore)

BOYS TRACK
Father Gabriel Richard 96.5, Madison Heights Bishop Foley 25.5: The Fighting Irish finish a perfect 4-0 in the Catholic League to win the Catholic League AA Sectional after routing the Ventures in a league meet. "We've won it the last few years," said FGR coach Don Canham, who has other accolades on his mind. "Right now, we're trying to get people qualified for regionals and the state meet." The Irish won all but three events, led by two wins apiece from Ryan Wawrzaszek, who won the 110 (16.8 seconds) and 300 (:45.5) meter hurdles, and Dominic Leoni, who claimed the discus (133 feet, five inches) and shot put (43-11).
