The Saline High School boys lacrosse team couldn't have gotten off to a better start against league rival Ann Arbor Pioneer on Monday.

Just 20 seconds into the game, on the Hornets' first possession, Ryan Mickevicius buried the game's first shot to give Saline a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, their advantage in time of possession, and on the scoreboard, proved temporary in a 14-4 loss.

"They ran a nice set play and caught us sleeping, but we responded and never trailed after that," said Pioneer coach Darren Millman.

The Pioneer defense allowed just one Hornet goal in each quarter.

"Their offense was their best defense," said Saline coach Matt Ceo. "They run a methodical offense and they limited our opportunities by just possessing the ball.

"They were the better team today."

Aidan Barrer, Christian Bouchard and Kevin Grupe each had hat tricks to lead Pioneer's (9-6, 5-0 SEC) seven goal scorers.

"We've started to find ourselves offensively," Millman said. "When we're effective, all six of our offensive players are contributing and we had that tonight."

T.J. Braun led Saline (9-5, 4-1 SEC) with two goals.

MORE BOYS LACROSSE Dexter 14, Chelsea 0: Andrew Erber had seven goals and three assists as the Dreadnaughts (10-5) rolled to a victory. GIRLS LACROSSE Tecumseh 12, Father Gabriel Richard 10: After leading 7-5 at halftime, fatigue set in for the Fighting Irish (1-13-1) and Tecumseh rallied for the road win. Gabriel Richard was playing without any substitute players because of a school field trip. Alicia Curmi, Alex Kiers and Elaine LeBel each scored two goals apiece for the Irish. (Boxscore)

SOFTBALL Chelsea 13, Lincoln 2 (5); Chelsea 11, Lincoln 1 (5): A steady rain throughout the game didn't keep the Bulldogs (20-5, 14-3 SEC) from extending their win streak to 12 games. "We're getting to the point where there's not that much time to get them in and tonight wasn't bad. Especially when you're playing well, you want to play," said Chelsea coach Bob Moffett. Ellie Stoffer led Chelsea, going 3-for-6 with five RBIs and six runs scored while Sarah Dixon was 4-for-5 with an RBI on the night. Freshman Arriel Mathews led Lincoln (13-9, 7-7 SEC), going 2-for-4, including a home run for her team's only run in the nightcap. Kaylie Dixon picked up both wins from the circle. The game was stopped after five innings and the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled. Kat Hoffman allowed one hit and struck out eight to earn the win. She also scored three runs. Kelsey Fearer and Margaret Campbell each had an RBI for Whitmore Lake in the rain-soaked, mercy rule-shortened affair. "It was raining when we started and raining when we left," said Whitmore Lake coach Patti Kobeck. "The rain made it tough. Couldn't make plays like we should and part of it I think was because of the weather." Madison's Katie Bird was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, three runs scored and two walks and Whitney Villarreal went the distance from the pitching circle, striking out five in the process. (Boxscore)
