Michigan delays first women's varsity lacrosse season, hires Jennifer Ulehla as coach

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Jennifer Ulehla is the first varsity women's lacrosse coach at Michigan, the school announced Thursday, but her team's first season was pushed back to 2013-14.

It was originally announced in late May that the Wolverines' first season would come in 2012-13. The men's program will still begin in 2011-12.

Ulehla has helped build a new program before. She was an assistant coach at Florida, helping the Gators recruit their first three classes and was on the sideline for the team's first varsity season in 2010.

Michigan will compete against Florida in the American Lacrosse Conference. That league also includes Big Ten rivals Ohio State, Penn State and Northwestern.

Previously, Ulehla was the head coach at James Madison (1994-2002) and Temple (2004-2006) before joining the U.S. National Elite Team as an assistant coach in 2006. (Complete bio)

"We are excited that Jennifer will be leading our newest program," said Brandon. "She brings a wealth of experience at both the collegiate and international levels. We look forward to having her build our women's lacrosse program to a nationally competitive and championship level in the next few years."

In the statement, Ulehla thanked Brandon and senior associate athletic director Bitsy Ritt, saying they have "committed the time and resources necessary to build a respected and nationally competitive lacrosse program."

The reasons for delaying the launch of the varsity program was not disclosed.
