Michigan loses Big Ten field hockey title game to Penn State, 3-2
Penn State senior Hannah Allison's goal with 9:09 to play gave the Nittany Lions a 3-2 win over Michigan in the Big Ten Conference field hockey tournament title game on Sunday.
Allison's game-winner was the only goal scored during the 35-minute second half. Penn State, the tournament host, got a pair of first-half goals from Amy Kelsey.
Rachael Mack and Kim Sheaffer scored for the Wolverines, who beat Penn State 2-0 on their way to an outright Big Ten regular-season title.
Penn State held a 12-11 shot advantage and both teams had three corners.
Michigan goalkeeper Haley Jones (Pioneer), who led the Big Ten with a 1.23 goals-against average, made one save in the loss.
It's the first Big Ten title since 1998 for Penn State, which pulled off back-to-back upsets of the tournament's No. 1 (Michigan) and No. 2 (Ohio State) seeds. The Nittany Lions beat Ohio State 1-0 in a semifinal on Friday.
Michigan was looking to win both the Big Ten regular season and tournament title for the fourth time in program history. The Wolverines accomplished the feat in 2000, 2004 and 2010.
The game was broadcast live by the Big Ten Network. Find video highlights here.
