Michigan softball team holds on for 7-6, season-opening win
The Michigan softball team entered the season ranked No. 16 in preseason polls behind three national Player of the Year candidates.
Those three players -- senior third baseman Amanda Chidester, senior centerfielder Bree Evans and junior second baseman Ashley Lane - were a combined 0-for-11 in a season-opening game in Baton Rouge, La., on Friday, but the Wolverines found enough offense from other spots in the lineup for a 7-6 win over Louisiana Tech.
Sophomore outfielder Lyndsay Doyle, freshman pitcher Sara Driesenga and freshman catcher Lauren Sweet had two hits apiece while sophomore first baseman Taylor Hasselbach hit a two-run home run to help Michigan take a 7-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings.
Louisiana Tech scored a pair of unearned runs against Driesenga in the fourth inning and then rallied for four runs off fellow freshman Haylie Wagner in the bottom of the seventh.
Wagner stranded the game-tying run on second base.
The two freshmen hurlers combined to two earned runs on six hits with three walks. Both teams committed two errors.
