Michigan wrestler Kellen Russell caps perfect season with national title and more results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Though his plight paled in comparison to the the performance night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA., Kellen Russell's battle through injury to win the 141-pound title at the NCAA Wrestling National Championships was a gut-wrenching performance nonetheless.

Two matches after Arizona State's Anthony Robles proved that you don't need two legs to have one hand raised, Russell won his championship on just one healthy one.

Russell suffered a severely sprained ankle in the second period of his championship match with Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov, but fought through obvious pain to pull out a 3-2 victory.

With the score tied 0-0 halfway through the second period, the match had to be stopped after Russell had his right ankle rolled during a scramble on the mat. After the match resumed, Russell came to his feet attempting an escape, but screamed out in pain and collapsed back onto the mat as soon as he put weight on the ankle.

Russell fought through the pain and scored an escape late in the second to take a 1-0 advantage into the third.

With the score tied 1-1 following a Novachkov escape in the third, Russell let the action come to him as his ankle was clearly still causing him much discomfort and hindering any potential offensive approach. With 32 seconds remaining, Russell countered a Novachkov takedown attempt, spun behind Novachkov and slammed him to the mat to score the match's only takedown.

Russell was Michigan's lone All-American out of eight national qualifiers on the weekend. He finished the season 38-0.
