Tom Brady calls current state of Michigan football 'ugly'

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Speaking on his weekly radio appearance on WEEI-FM in Boston, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said the current state of the Michigan football program is "bad" and "ugly."

"Coach Lloyd Carr was a great coach for that school," said Brady, a Michigan alum. "It's ugly now, especially watching Ohio State beat us like they did, listening to all those jerks."

There's more.

"It's bad," Brady said. "Every time I talk to a former teammate of mine, guys who go up to the game, they have no explanation."

The Detroit Free Press has more on the transcript from Brady's WEEI interview.

It is completely RR fault for the state this program is in. Any other coach would coach the basics and adjust the scheme to best utilize the players on the team to prevent two horrible seasons. If that means playing a pro-style offense then play it. I never thought he was good enough to coach at michigan. A lot of people don't. Even the players. Look at Ryan Mallet. Every time I watch him play I get more angry about the coaching choice that was made.

Tell 'em Brady! What coach in his right mind would make wearing a RED wristband part of his playcalling at MICHIGAN??!! I've have not seen or heard anything that makes me think rich red will ever "get it" at MICHIGAN..sad, but true... Ban The Red Wristband! Go Blue! v

I think stan is actually Rodriguez himself. Rodriguez has taken to troling web blogs and calling all anti rodriguez posters "Mongoloids" which if i am correct would be a SLUR toward mentally retarded persons. Shame on you Rich Rodriguez for making slurs toward mentally retarded persons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzUhsngrONA

rightmind250, correct. Stan, give it up. The article (nor my first comment) never mentioned RR. Yet, your knee-jerk response to blindly defend RR speaks volumes. Keep it up. IN MICHIGAN WE TRUST

Hey stan, are your eyes always like that or were you just born that way? Brady said, " The current state of Michigan football is bad, ugly". Twist it anyway you want but your classmate on the short bus, Richrod, is responsible for the current state of the program. Catch upo boy, we shouldn't have to explain the article to you. Its right there, read it slowly now, pronounce every syllable, B a d, u g l y. Got it? Good boy. Now go back in your trailer and be quiet.

I'm sure Rick Leach will take to the airwaves with Sam Webb to call out Brady on this.....

Oh so it's just directed at SC. Ok I get it now I guess. Personally i don't think it's going to get any better with RR & Staff there but it's just an opinion.

The implication by SC is that Brady made a negative comment about the current staff, when in fact, all he said was the last two years have not been good. That is a fact that cannot be argued. The only difference in looking toward the future is that people like Mary Sue Coleman and Bill Martin is that they are willing to give the guy a chance, whereas people like SC just think firing the coach is going to make everything better. People who closely watch the program can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

The article never infers Brady said anything bad about the current staff, why are you mentioning this?

I understand that they were trying to rile the "mongies" up by posting this out of context. Tom Brady stated a fact and did not directly say anything negative about the current staff. I do not believe that was the case.

"anti-Michigan mongoloids" Stay classy Stan Diego. Well this is the way the news works Stan, try to keep up. A former Michigan Athlete who's very famous now said somthing about his former school, so the news of the town the school is in reported it. Understand?

When the public has such high expectations for this program, there is no surprise that few understand the process of restructuring a team. Carr had his style of coaching, and perhaps it was more effective, but negative pyschology had much more to do with this season turining out the way it did than player talent or coaching decisions.

More former or current players need to speak out as Brady has. This train wreck of Michigan football has gone on long enough. IN MICHIGAN WE TRUST

Actually my mistake, Henson was never a starter while Brady was on the team.

WEll Carr got a National Championship With Brady on the bench so your claim may be a little out there. unless of course you are arguing that he won it with Moeller's recruits...which I give a little bit of weight to.

I agree with him it has been a rough couple of years but I think they will be very good very soon. If not there will be a new head coach. If Coach Carr was so great for the school why didn't he choose Brady over Henson? Tom Brady has done more for Michigan football than Carr ever has or will. I hope Michigan football will make him proud again soon.

Get RR out of there and you have a chance to regain some respect. Bump Elliot had a couple bad years and then Bo came in and did a so-so job so it can be done. RR better win some serious games next year to keep his job. Dopn't see it happening though.

Tom Brady was right when he said what he did. He's a true Michigan fan, and he's disappointed with the current state of michigan football, as are most michigan fans that remember the glory years.

Old story... but yeah I've watched games with former players and they can't recognize UM football anymore... Everything they were taught the last 40 years (basic fundamentals, minimizing mistakes, miscues, etc.) seems to have gone out the window and that's what kills them the most... Not a pretty sight to see

I was hoping that Tom would take some grad level courses here and QB for a while.
