Anthony Standifer continues run of DBs in Michigan's 2012 recruiting class

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Anthony Standifer became the third defensive back to verbally commit to join the Michigan football program's 2012 recruiting class in the past 13 days, according to reports.

Tom VanHaaren, a recruiting analyst for MGoBlog.com, reported via Twitter that Standifer confirmed his decision to him during a visit to Ann Arbor today.

Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Terry Richardson started the run on defensive backs on May 19. He was followed by Sylvania, Ohio, safety Allen Gant, who committed on Tuesday.

Standifer is a 6-foot-1, 178-pound cornerback from Crete-Monee (Ill.) High School.

The Chicago Tribune included Standifer in a recent article about players from Illinois that boosted their recruiting stock with strong spring showings.

Special writer Tim O'Halloran on Standifer: Crete-Monee cornerback Anthony Standifer (6-1, 178 pounds) drew minimal interest heading into the spring, but major programs jumped on the Standifer bandwagon after watching him in workouts. Standifer added offers from several schools, including Michigan, Notre Dame and Minnesota. He plans to hit the road this summer for unofficial visits to Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Illinois. (Note: Another Michigan target, Chicago Simeon offensive tackle Jordan Diamond, is also part of this article.)

According to Scout.com, Standifer is a 3-star recruit and the 26th-ranked cornerback in the country.

He's the 14th member of the Michigan recruiting class, the 11th that plays a defensive position. Standifer does break one Michigan recruiting trend: He's the first player in the class not from Michigan or Ohio.

What I like about this kid is he seems to know how to tackle with two hands and arms instead of just trying to knock a runner off his feet which seems to be the popular thing to do nowadays.

Mattison-mania is in full force. The defensive side of the ball should look a lot better by 2013.

Okay, 1st of all a 3 star rating for this kid is laughable, he's at least a high 4 star recruit! Talk about impressive, as the earlier commenters noted, smooth back pedal with a great eye for the ball, tall and can get up and get it with one hand at times. What a sure tackler who's not afraid to find the ball carrier and the way he lowers his shoulders to lay the wood. I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but this kid looked like Sir Charles Woodson (yes, I have decide he's knighted, I tapped him on the shoulder with my sword). Anthony, welcome to U-M and you have made a wise choice. I am so geeked for the future of our program, TiM, Go Blue!!!

Behold the power of having Mattison as DC ... they're coming because they know Michigan has a renewed commitment to rock-solid defense. "We are in good hands" ... with Hoke, Borges, Mattison, et al.

Another fast, physical defensive recruit. Looks really smooth while back peddling also. Hoke and Co. are doing a fantastic job filling up this recruiting class. Go blue.

Tape looks good on this kid. Good size, athletic, not afraid to tackle, good ball skills. Welcome to the Maize & Blue Anthony, you made a wise choice!

Anthony looks to be a fantastic athlete with excellent "ball skills". 9 INT in his junior year is outstanding and if you watch the highlight film above, he has an innate ability to locate the ball and adjust to it in flight ...that is something that is pure athleticism and is difficult to teach.. this kid has HUGE upside... props to Coach Hoke, Coach Mattison and staff for just continuing to reel these players in... Welcome to Michigan Anthony... NC ring awaits you. Go Blue. This is Michigan.
