Walk-off home run gives Minnesota a series sweep of Michigan baseball team and more Sunday results

Matt Halloran’s home run in the bottom of the tenth inning gave Minnesota a 4-3 win over the Michigan baseball team Sunday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, completing a Big Ten-opening series sweep.

Michigan freshman pitcher Matt Ogden (1-2) allowed the game-winning solo shot after retiring the first four batters he faced in order. Halloran went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

The Wolverines (12-16, 0-3) battled back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game on an RBI single by Michael O’Neill in the seventh inning. Will Drake (2-for-5, RBI) and John DiLaura (2-for-4, 2 runs) each had a pair of hits for Michigan. (Boxscore)

Minnesota (16-13, 3-0) scored three early runs against Michigan starter Ben Ballantine. Freshman Trent Szkutnik entered the game in the third inning and got the Wolverines out of a second-and-third, no-out jam before allowing just two hits and striking out three in six scoreless innings.

Michigan hosts Central Michigan at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

More baseball

Ohio 10, Eastern Michigan 9: Ohio led 5-4 after a wild first inning and held on for the MAC win. Jensen Painter, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning that put the Bobcats (13-14, 3-3) ahead 9-6. EMU (10-17, 3-3) leadoff hitter Ben Magsig went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Matt Hitt drove in three runs. (Details)

Softball

Michigan 7, Indiana 2: Junior second baseman Ashley Lane went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the third inning that gave the Wolverines (24-10, 5-1) an early 4-0 lead. Lyndsay Doyle went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Amanda Chidester was 2-for-2 with a home run. Freshman pitcher Haylie Wagner allowed six hits and no earned runs in a complete-game win. (Details)

Eastern Michigan 7, Kent State 4: Amanda Herron went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a home run for the Eagles (14-18, 3-1 MAC), who also scored four unearned runs on Kent State’s two errors. (Details)

Men’s golf

LSU National Invitational: Michigan finished 10th out of 12 teams with senior Matt Thompson placing 20th on the individual leaderboard. Host LSU won the event, followed by Big Ten teams Iowa and Purdue. (Details)

Women’s tennis

Michigan 4, Indiana 3: The teams split six singles matches and the No. 14-ranked Wolverines (12-5, 5-0 Big Ten) won the doubles point. (Details)
