Ann Arbor gas station sold in tax foreclosure auction to reopen after renovations

By Paula Gardner

The former Packard Mini Mart has been wrapped in yellow "caution" tape since it was sold this fall in Washtenaw County's tax foreclosure auction.

But that's about to change.

First, minor renovations are planned for the building, located at 3005 Packard on the northeast corner of Platt.

Next up: It'll reopen as a gas station and convenience store.

The new owners are Davuluri Brothers Inc, a group of four people based in Canton. They paid $288,500 for the property, according to city records.

I'd been unable to reach them after the sale, but talked this week with their contractor, John Holowicki of Livonia.

He just got permits OK'd to install new windows.

"We'll be cutting out some of the concrete," he said, "and opening up the store so it's more visible."

The Packard Mini Mart at 3005 Packard Road soon will reopen under a new owner.

The timetable? "It's immediate," Holowicki said.

He's now gathering final bids from subcontractors and putting the final package together for the owners.

They're "ready to go," Holowicki said.

The start of the changes could be visible by the end of this week, he added.

The opening of the station on the corner comes about a year after it last operated. It also comes amid more changes in the local gas station landscape.

Among them: The BP station across Platt from this one closed last week, and the remodeled Speedway at Ellsworth and South State just reopened. Another remodeled gas station, a Marathon on Washtenaw near the entrance to Arborland, also is close to opening.

Scott@ My use of the term "granola head" is not intended in a derogatory way. More in the vein of a loose definition like "liberal" or "conservative" or "independent" might loosely define ones leanings on some issues.. If you find it offensive just know it wasn't intended to be.

I ate granola this morning for breakfast. Didn't realize I was part of a "group" or anything. I just think it's delicious. Craig@, instead of name calling perhaps just make your point, which is that some folks (who may or may not enjoy breakfast cereal) might object to having 3 gas stations within a 1 block area.

clownfish@"Which "granola heads" scorned you, Craig? " none yet. I was merely suggesting some may find my comment a sign of whats wrong with the world. Conspicuous consumption, fossil fuel pollution, lazy Americans, etc. I am comfortable suggesting that there are folks in Ann Arbor who would suggest 3 gas stations within a block of each other 2-3 too many. And, indeed some of their arguments I embrace.

Nice to see this intersection coming back to life - it was getting pretty depressing driving by the closed Mini Mart gas station and doubly so when the BP station also closed for a short time.

I live a couple blocks from the intersection so this is good news to me. At the risk of facing the scorn of "granola heads" its nice to have stations on both sides of the street. It cuts down on my left hand turns at a busy intersection.

The BP on Packard is now open, that's right, with new owners though. I drove past there Sunday evening, went in, and was told they have new owners. Fast turn-around!
