Discount Tire moves forward on plans for store on Jackson Road in Scio Township

By Angela Smith

Discount Tire expects to open its new Scio Township store in the fall.

The company, which won approval to build the store earlier this month, is building the store at 5210 Jackson Road next to Panera Bread on a 1.62-acre parcel east of Zeeb and southeast of the I-94 interchange.

The store will be about 7,000 square feet with six service bays and a 1,300-square-foot showroom, Discount Tire's Kendra States said.

The store is moving forward seven years after Discount Tire originally launched its plan to build a store in Scio Township.

The plan was originally presented to the Planning Commission in 2004, again in 2006, and yet again in 2010.

It's the fifth Washtenaw County location for Discount Tire, which has its roots in Ann Arbor.

The company started as a small independent business in 1960 when founder Bruce T. Halle opened a shop selling six types of tires on Stadium Boulevard in Ann Arbor.

The headquarters later moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., and the company recently opened its 800th store.

Unlike Ann Arbor, Scio may allow Discount Tire to have a decent parking lot.

Just what we need another tire shop in Scio. We could of had Cosco, but the Scio NIMBY's would rather make Jackson Rd look like Washtenaw Ave.
