Flat Top Grill opens 1st Michigan restaurant in Ann Arbor on Washtenaw

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A Chicago-based restaurant chain expanded into Michigan on Monday with the opening of Flat Top Grill on Washtenaw Avenue in the Huron Village Shopping Center.

The custom stir-fry restaurant opened for lunch, nearly three months after corporate officials at Flat Out Crazy Co. confirmed they'd signed a lease to convert the former fitness equipment store into their 15th restaurant.

The company - which operates in three other states and also runs the Stir Crazy chain - started in suburban Chicago in 1995.

The restaurant joins Qdoba in an outlot building at the shopping center, located at the corner of Huron Parkway, about a half-mile west of the US-23 interchange.

Initial estimates pegged the opening at the end of October. Company officials were unavailable to answer questions about the timing delay or staffing at the new store.

$5 extra for take-out? That makes no sense. Their argument doesn't hold much weight, either. What's the real reason? Wanting to cover the expense of take-out containers, or making sure the waitress/bus boys get a tip?

Saw the second post, and as our office is just a minute away, my wife went there today for a takeout order, and was told it would cost $5 extra, as "they are mainly a sit down restaurant".......got a salad from Whole Foods, instead. Disappointing and strange..... Gosh, you'd think they'd like to have the tables open for as many sit down customers, as possible.

Went to the Flat Top in downtown Chicago in August and was very impressed. As Bruce said, food was great and staff very helpful. The manager of that place said he was going to be the one to open the one here and that they were very excited about being in Ann Arbor. Chicago store did have a liquer license.

I noticed the new store where American Fitness used to be, as I went past on Sunday. I had no idea that it wasn't opened yet.
