The company announced today that chief financial officer James J. Connor has been promoted to CEO. Connor, a former managing director of manufacturing consultancy BBK Ltd. and former CEO of auto supplier Newcor Inc., will transition into the new job immediately.

He succeeds Jim Wainwright, who left in March after the company revealed a 2010 loss of $56.8 million.

The company hired consultancy Heidrick and Struggles to conduct a national search, saying in a statement that it ultimately selected Connor for his "deep operational, financial and leadership skills."

The announcement comes less than a year after Tecumseh announced plans to develop a technology center in a 50,000-square-foot building it purchased near South State and Textile roads.

Any company that is run by a bean counter will have problems. CEOs should be either market driven, (sales) or operations, (engineering or manufacturing), not accounting driven.
