Ziebart Tidy Car relocates to larger temporary facility in Ypsilanti Township after fire

By Angela Smith

Last month AnnArbor.com reported about an accidental late night fire at Ziebart Tidy Car on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township.

Since then, the business has temporarily relocated, and is “going well” according to General Manager Tom Acosta.

The new location is at the corner of Ellsworth and Hewitt roads in Ypsilanti Township in the Car Port Auto Plaza.

According to Acosta, the new location is over twice the size of the old location at 4,500 square feet. The new shop is equipped with 4 vehicle lifts, 3 more than what they were using at the Carpenter Road location.

The store also is using newly purchased detailing and rust protection equipment as staff waits on estimates that will guide restoration of the old facility.

Acosta expects repairs to take months, noting that the roof work cannot begin until after the snow melts.

But he acknowledges that the temporary relocation actually has been good for business: Sales are up 4 percent for the month.

The new location is in a plaza that shares retail space with other vehicle-friendly businesses like J. J. Car Wash, Victory Lane Oil Change and Bear Claw Coffee .

Owner Larry Smith has overseen the Ypsilanti Ziebart location for over 20 years now, and Acosta says the company has seen many loyal customers since the fire.

“Everyone in town knows about it (the fire), and they seek us out…It’s very encouraging.”
