The Michigan League of Conservation Voters has announced its support of Mayor John Hieftje's reelection campaign, saying Ann Arbor needs a mayor with the vision to continue its green leadership.

The endorsement of Hieftje is the first municipal-level endorsement the Michigan LCV has made in this election cycle statewide.

LCV officials acknowledged it's unusual for them to endorse in a city-level race and said their involvement in Ann Arbor's mayoral race is indicative of the "exceptionally high quality of candidate seeking return to office."

“With one of our offices located in Ann Arbor, Michigan LCV is fortunate to have a front row seat to the remarkable work Mayor Hieftje is doing in this city,” Lisa Wozniak, LCV executive director, said in a statement. “The mayor is well aware that sound and progressive environmental policies are vital not only for creating a high quality of life, but also for creating a friendly climate for some of the Michigan’s leading alternative energy companies to stimulate the local economy.”

Hieftje faces off in the Aug. 3 Democratic primary against Patricia Lesko, who recently picked up the endorsements of both the local and statewide chapters of the Sierra Club, another environmental group.

Throughout his time in office, the LCV stated, Hieftje has been a constant champion in the effort to make Ann Arbor a pioneer in municipal conservation. The group cited Hieftje's advocacy in the areas of renewable energy, greenways, public transportation, walking, biking and smart growth to combat sprawl.

Under Hieftje's leadership, LCV officials added, Ann Arbor has maintained a stricter wetlands protection program than either the state or federal government.

Hieftje said in a statement he was honored to have the endorsement of the LCV, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that seeks to promote environmental goals by supporting candidates who share its interests.

“Their commitment to advocacy at the state level continues to be reflected in their hands-on approach to local issues here in Ann Arbor," Hieftje said. "I look forward to building on the success our city has had through environmental leadership in Michigan and continuing to fight for the policies that make us a magnet for green technology investment.”
