"Lost" confusing again; further Oscar thoughts; weekend event previews; and more

By Bob Needham

Between Ann Arborites Darrell Hough and Andrea Hough competing on "The Biggest Loser" and the "Lost" plot ties to the University of Michigan, Tuesday has become a big TV night for our fair city.

Let's start today with the two-hour season premiere of "Lost." If you don't watch the show, you still doubtless know it's about plane crash survivors on a mysterious island. One key plot element is a fictional University of Mchigan project called the DHARMA initiative from the 1970s.

Not much about DHARMA last night, although on the show's web site the entertaining "Lost Untangled" video recap does have a quick inside joke that locals should appreciate.

And there's plenty more for fans to talk about this morning. Assume all the following links have spoiler information: Salon.com's "I Like To Watch" blog has an entertaining recap of the double episode. Alan Sepinwall at our sister site NJ.com has a very extensive review. EW.com's Popwatch offers up an interview with the series creators that explains a few things. (Sort of. Naturally.) And the Gunaxin blog has a roundup of the five funniest "Lost" videos on YouTube.

• Meanwhile, the weight-loss action continued on "The Biggest Loser." Catch up with Chrysta Cherrie's full recap for AnnArbor.com. Other perspectives available from EW.com here and People.com here.

MORE TELEVISION

• People.com has a complimentary recap of "American Idol"'s audition show in Denver.

Justin Mentell of "Boston Legal" has died in a car crash.

Oprah Winfrey is planning a separate documentary TV series focusing on the last season of her talk show.

• Now this ought to be good: Jon Stewart will guest tonight on "The O'Reilly Factor."

• The Huffington Post has an entertaining interview with comic Demetri Martin.

Rupert Murdoch says Fox has had talks with ousted "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien.

• And if you want to hear Mel Gibson call a TV news reporter by a really bad word — one not fit to reproduce here — we can help you out:

MOVIES

• Following up on yesterday's Oscar nominations, the Los Angles Times has an interesting piece on how the expanded best-picture field opens up room for some more popular movies. But CBS.com notes that comedies still didn't do well.

• The Detroit News reports that the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit will screen rare old clips of the city on Feb. 10.

A new documentary on J.D. Salinger is aiming for a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

MUSIC

DANCE

• The Michigan Daily has a preview of this weekend's (Re)Visionary Dances, four concerts by the U-M dance department. And here's the AnnArbor.com preview from Sunday. The show opens Thursday; watch for a review early Friday morning.

THEATER

• An item in the Ann Arbor Chronicle stops in at a rehearsal for the Burns Park Players' upcoming production of "Guys and Dolls." If you missed it, Jenn McKee's preview of the show for AnnArbor.com is here, and watch our site for a review after it opens on Friday.

• Finally today, here's a a great little video piece on “Our Town,” posted from CBS Sunday Morning, with Mo Rocca. There are at least two upcoming productions of "Our Town" planned for the area, at U-M and at the Purple Rose in Chelsea; watch AnnArbor.com for details.

Renee Tellez and Jenn McKee contributed to this roundup. Bob Needham is director of entertainment content for AnnArbor.com. Reach him at bobneedham@annarbor.com or 734-623-2541, and follow him on Twitter @bobneedham.
