Kara French of Ann Arbor competed on the popular syndicated television game show "Jeopardy!" tonight, and if you don't want to know the outcome, read no further.

In the meet-the-contestants segment, French said she conducts research about sexuality in Revolution-era America. She got off to an early lead in the competition, although she ended the "Single Jeopardy" round in third place.

She quickly caught up in the "Double Jeopardy" round, and a correct "Daily Double" wager put her into the lead, where she stayed for much of the round. At the end she was in second place with $15,600, behind the leader with $19,400 but ahead of the returning champion.

The "Final Jeopardy" answer: "In the four major U.S. sports leagues, he's won more regular-season MVP awards than any other player." French wagered $5,000 and responded incorrectly, landing her in third place for the night. Both other contestants correctly asked, "Who is Wayne Gretzky?"

The winning contestant took home $31,201, an unusually high total, and host Alex Trebek exclaimed, "What a game!"

my wife was on jeopardy years ago ....its a tough gig. a number of shows are filmed back to back so if you see a multiple show winner they've probably been through alot of stress and clothing changes on the same day. even losers can walk away with alot of goodies, such as camcorders, and lifetime supplies of advertiser products (such as creamette noodles in our case)....but you have to pay taxes on the prizes, so the noodles were not accepted by my wife.... .

It's not that unusual. She was the beneficiary, but it was a fair decision as she came up with a correct answer the question-writer had not anticipated. There's a decent break (more than you see on the show) between rounds, and the judges check everything the contestants have said at that time. She did well on a tougher than average question set, I thought. A relatively easy final question, but even if she had gotten it and bet the maximum, the winner was covering. And sports is often a complete hit or miss for people on Jeopardy.

Not sure how unusual this is, but a correction was made and one of the contestants was credited $2,000.
