Well, it might not be quite the Ann Arbor homecoming gig fans have dreamed of, but it's darn close: Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band will play the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center in Ypsilanti on Nov. 2.

Just announced by concert promoter LiveNation, the date is part of a fall tour. Tickets, at prices to be announced, go on sale Sept. 24. Tickets will be available via emutix.com.

Although Seger has lived in the Oakland County area for many years, he grew up in Ann Arbor — he's noted that his song "Main Street" was actually about Ann Street — and started performing here. Initially he had regional hits with songs like "East Side Story," "2 + 2 = ?" and "Persecution Smith."

He quickly became a central figure in the Detroit rock scene and eventually broke through to massive mainstream success in the 1970s and '80s, turning out deathless radio classics like "Night Moves," "Turn the Page," "Rock and Roll Never Forgets," "Old Time Rock and Roll," "Hollywood Nights," "Against the Wind," "Roll Me Away," and countless others. In 2004 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—the first of three acts with local ties to be so honored.

Seger had been quiet in recent years, until an acclaimed comeback tour a couple of years ago that was widely assumed to be a farewell. Earlier this year, however, Seger and his Silver Bullet Band regrouped for a new tour—including three dates at the Palace of Auburn Hills—that drew largely positive response. A new album is now in the works.

The full announcement from LiveNation:

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band announced today new dates for the second leg to their 2011 North American Tour. The dates will include a wide range of venues including New York’s newly renovated Madison Square Garden, the Eastern Michigan University campus, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino, and Seger’s first stadium festival show in decades, Orlando Calling. Additional dates will be announced shortly including the West coast swing of Seger’s tour. Fans can expect Seger and his Silver Bullet Band to perform timeless classics like “Night Moves” and “Old Time Rock & Roll” alongside new songs from his upcoming new release.

On Tuesday, September 13, Capitol/EMI will reissue Seger’s multi-platinum Live Bullet and Nine Tonight concert albums digitally remastered with exclusive bonus tracks. Both titles will be released with restored original artwork and updated packaging and offered in a special CD/T-Shirt Box combination at select retailers.

Seger & his Silver Bullet Band’s live performances led to record sales in excess of 51 million including 11 platinum and seven multi-platinum RIAA-certified album awards. Seger holds the distinction in 2010 for the #1 Catalog Album of the Decade for his Greatest Hits, which has sold over nine million copies (U.S.A.) to date, posting an unbroken 16-year streak on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums and Catalog Albums charts.

It would be great to see him at Chrysler, but the Convocation Center is a wonderful venue for concerts. And the last time I was there, it was extremely well-organized and easy to get out afterwards, PLUS, they didn't even charge for parking!

We saw him a couple of years ago and he was just as good as he ever was. His song writing is better than ever too. See him if you can.

When was the last time they even had a concert at Crisler? I saw Elton John at Crisler in the mid-90's and I don't recall any since. Seger at the Big House is a great idea!
